Okay so about two weeks ago my GPU, 6990M, started acting weird. It started displaying artifacts and would only display half of my desktop at times. I never OC'd the card nor are the temps high. So I used the AMD Cleanup utility to remove the drivers, software, etc. That still didn't help.

About two days ago I started it up again and I get no display on the screen. I start into Safe Mode with an external monitor and I see everything. I use the cleanup utility again and reinstall the drivers in Safe Mode. I restart after installing the drivers and I get nothing on the laptop screen and the external monitor... I figured there was something wrong with Windows, as I've seen in the past.. So I did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). After installing the graphics drivers, it partially resolved my issues with the external monitor. I'm able to see Windows, but it shows the following: The resolution of the screen is 1024x768

Also, when I attempt to change the resolution to anything higher than 1024x768. I just get a black screen...
I've tried the BIOS reset (pulling the main battery and CMOS batter, holding the power button down for 30+ seconds) multiple times. I've also tried the Fn+F6 key combo with no luck..

So I'm currently looking at replacing the GPU.

Onto the next issue, the damn RGB LED screen. I've taken it apart and seen a plethora of DP/N (Dell Part Numbers). I'm unsure of which one is the inverter (or if it even has one..). I know that the screen itself is DP/N: 0K1NFP. There are two components that I'm unsure of, both are highlighted with a yellow box in the pictures below. If anyone can provide some input on troubleshooting the screen or on the part numbers that would be great!

    Thanks in advance! :)

Okay... so I did a quick search on eBay for a replacement screen and found this. From the looks of it, it has an inverter built-in. Is that correct?

    Did you try reflowing it?

Hmm i have no idea about the inverter, but you are gonna have a hard time swapping the screen, unless you buy the entire assembly.

Haven't tried that. I'll do a search for that procedure. If you can provide a good link, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I just found someone else on NBR that had this same issue. LINK

I think I might try reflowing it. Wish me luck!

Here is how i did it :), the card is still perfectly well, and it's been almost a year i think :D

If you plan on replacing only the screen, and not the entire assemby i suggest you take a look at this video:
Dell Alienware M17x R2 Screen Replacement by TimsComputerFix.net - YouTube
It's a rather complicated peice of art by dell xD, so i'd save myself some trouble and just get the assembly :D

What's wrong with your screen anyway?
