How do I even know if both are running?
-
-
Just run afterburner and check GPU usage for both
-
-
take the screenie after you run a benchmark like 3dmark 11 or FireStrike
-
Jesus lord thats 1.5 gigs
-
gogogo you need to stress test it anyways!
-
Unigine is ok? its only 245mb
-
try unigine first but also try 3dmark 11 and FireStrike, let us know the situation after unigine
-
Here it is. Unigine's results Screenshot by Lightshot
-
Post a screen shot of MSI after burner while the Unigine is running, this will show if both GPU are working.
-
Here it is Screenshot by Lightshot
-
You are not running in Crossfire /:
-
I did like such, only difference I out both cards in and then flashed them using maxslo method described here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/734549-should-i-buy-m17x-r2-5.html
But nothing is happening. I also uninstalled the ATI drivers and installed the Dell ones AMD Mobility Radeon HD5870, v.8.763-100810a-104118C-Dell, A01 Driver Details | Dell US and when I opened GPUZ it gave me an error about openCl and Radeonpro said something about AMD libraries. Also after installing th dell drivers i tried installing this vbios AMD Mobility Radeon HD5870, v.13B96101.104, A01 Driver Details | Dell US but said it was only for m17x computers ( and it is what I have ) so Im lost. -
-
1. Are the cards originally from Dell?
2. What OS are you using?
2. I would honestly PM http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/610357-m17x-r1-5870-crossfire-running.html the OP in this link. -
yes they are from dell
windows 7
Why is this saying its enabled?
same as here..
Screenshot by Lightshot -
Its showing that both of them are recognized. Do some more testing, and watch MSI afterburner while the test are being performed GPU1 & GPU2, if you notice activity on both cards while the benchmark test is running then that is good.
You can also test a benchmark with crossfire disabled and then test it with it enabled, if you notice a good amount of change with the scores you know it is working. -
Thing is MSI is only showing one of them fluctuating. does this mean 1 of the card is not installed? Screenshot by Lightshot
Also which one is the master? If I open the laptop and im facing is. Is the right or the left the master?
This only shows GPU 1 -
Also i only hear the right fan going full speed during a benchmark test
-
-
Also I was reading something about master and slave.. what does it mean. And about they cant have the same serial and such.. whats up with that.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
On older cards there were specific bios files for master and slave cards, I think the 5870m did not use that system though.
-
So im still lost here... Please anyone who knows how to fix this garbage...
-
Hello? People come on. Give this fellow some direction. I need help
-
Did you PM the guy i mentioned, i noticed you just posted in that thread, send him a Private Message. As for the issues, most of us have not had personal experience with that configuration since its so old. Your cards are not operating in Crossfire.
-
I did pm him. he has not been on for 3 months. Im about to shoot myself. maxslo ive seen knows about it but wont reply to a PM.
I took it apart and left 1 card on ( the left side if you are facing it open ) and the computer wouldnt even boot, just a black screen.
Took the left card out and put the right in same issue would not boot just a black screen.
Changed sides for both and put them both. Now it boots and when i do a benchmark it crashes.. HELP ME GOD.
And when instaling CCC i get this .

Great now neither fan is working. as soon as I run a benchmark tmp goes to 100% and crashes... Why the HECK it says Screenshot by Lightshot and this Screenshot by Lightshot it cleary says disabled. so I enable them Screenshot by Lightshot and still MSI shows only 1 running ( still no fan running ).. Another thing both card have the same IDENTICAL INFO'S? Screenshot by Lightshot and Screenshot by Lightshot what the heck is this?
MSI GRAPH Screenshot by Lightshot ( is it showing both cards? )
Here are both cards with xfire cable already with thermal pads.

Also why Furmark detects only 1 GPU? http://prntscr.com/5bznac
I dont get this,,, http://prntscr.com/5bzqi4
which is the primary card? the left one or the right one?
The only fan that turns on even using HWinfo is the left one. whats going on?Last edited: Dec 1, 2014 -
The left slot is the master slot. I would run just the left card by itself and see if it will benchmark without crashing. I'm wondering if one of those cards is bad causing instability in crossfire.
-
when i put 1 card only wont boot. get black screen. Why neither fan is running or turnin on :/
-
no matter what i do, just the CPU fan runs. please help.
-
Hi, sorry for not replying, i was busy at work.
It's not like any other issue with 5870M's i've ever seen.
Did you try changing the BIOS setting "Hybrid Graphic" Enable/DIsable?
I think your best bet would be to find someone with R2 to make sure that both cards are indeed working, but i don't like the fact that laptop won't start with either one in primary slot... -
I did try changing the graphic settings in BIOS. I also retried with only 1 card in the master slot and it worked fine, but the Fan is not working. I know the fans are good because right now I have the 280m on to test them and they run just fine. As soon as I put the 5870M they dont work.
The bios on the 5870 are the latest one. As you can see up there. GPUZ says when both 5870m that cross fire is enabled aswell as CCC. But Furmark only detects 1 GPU.
Also the Fan issue is driving me nuts. the only fan that runs is the cpu one. -
Does the GPU fan spinup when posting?... if not that would be some serious issue syou've got right there :/
I would focus on getting 1 card working first, before rusing to CF.
Did you ever run single 5870M card setup or did you get CF set and istall both of them in? -
When i got them I installed them both. Then i took 1 out.
the left one. At first it wasnt booting but then I got it up and running.
But the fans wont turn even with 1 card in. I flashed it with your Bios version, Tried using the fan with HWInfo and only the cpu fan runs. I dont even get an option for the fan in MSI Afterburner.
Again I know the fans wor cuz they turn on with the 280m cards. -
nothing then?
-
Aha, well wihout the left one it wouldn't work obviously...
Weird issue, usually the fans run at fixed speed 2000-2500 rpm, but your are not running at all :/.... your motherboard BIOS is the latest i suppose?
Yeah it's definitely some incompatibility with the Mobo and 5870M's... where are you located?
And where did you buy those 5870M's from? -
Bought it from ebay it said they were fro an m17x r2. Now this question. Ive been reading the m15x also used 5780m's. What is this cards are from m15x instead? when i tried to use the flashing tool from dell ( bios flash ) it pops a screen saying ( this program is designed or only works with m17x systems ) is that telling me its from m15x? if they are from m15x is there another bios i have to revert too? Would they work with this m17x r1?
This is the product I bought.
Last edited: Dec 5, 2014 -
I have used an gtx 260m from an m15x r2 in my m17x r2 without any problem if it can help.
-
That doesn't matter it's a bug with the program... i get same message on R2, so it's totally normal... M15x doesn't have 5870M in original configuration... max for M15x was 5850M.. the 5870M's are all from M17x R2, no other card type was ever made. (Dell type)
If i were you i'd try the cards in R2 asap, and return it if the fans won't work natively in R2...
Yeah well the R2 is way more versatibile and accepts a large number of aftermarket GPU's -
Dont have an R2 and dont know anyone with one.
.. Damnit i guess im screwed if theres noone with some options here :/
-
Surely someone here on forum would be willing to help if you live nearby. There is so many R2 users here that atleast one should be located close enough to test
Is there a restocking fee for non-faulty returns? -
Where do you live? Hopefully you won't have to ship the card a long way if anywhere at all for someone to test it for you.
-
I live in new jersey. I am not in NJ though atm. Im in the Caribbean. Maxslo there is no refunding :/ .. This is giving me a headache..
-
Ouch. I'm in Oklahoma so maybe someone closer to nj will chime in and offer to help.
-
I live in france .. sorry that's a bit far.
-
Ouch, why is there no refunding?
Well i'm in EU too :/ I hope you get someone closer... -
I guess ill toss this cards in the gabage. Cant make the laptop recognize both and cant make the fans work.
-
