ive been hearing and reading rumors that the m17x and m18x are getting GPU updates. I was wondering if the update for the m17x was true, or if its still just a rumor and June may go by with no update.

If that's the case, I wonder what GPU we're talking about because the only thing faster than the 6970 is a GTX485, and it's so marginally that it can barely be called an upgrade.

6970 is already the best mobile ATI card out. What more do you need, besides crossfireX?

    What more could I want?

    Possibly a i7 2920xm
    And a 485m gpu

Why? Because I don't want the m18x due to the lack of a 3D screen, and I would like to have the performance of the 6970 w/ 3D

And I love the m17x r3 because it has HDMI input as I'm a huge console gamer but I also like to view 3D

What I meant was, if you want ATI, then 6970 is already the best, so what more do you want? If you want NV, then that's a diff topic :), and an answer already exists like you suggested: 485m. 3D would be nice though with the ATI, I agree.

HDMI-In isn't as great as you think, man. I don't think too many people use it, and also, I've been having issues with it.

I'd totally buy the 485 separately if it were available for the R3 AND works with 3D.

The 485 already works with 3d on the r3. Someone on here has done it and works great. I could be mistaken though, but I'm pretty sure. Something didn't work I think optimus, but possibly could have been 3d.

if the rumoured GTX580M happened to be true, would it be significantly faster than GTX485M, or maybe even its new rival AMD Blackcomb XTX?

I use my R3 as a television in my home office. The HDMI-in allows me to use my HD cable tv tuner box as a source. It works great and saved me a little $$$ because I was going to buy a small tv for my office anyway.

I think HDMI-in is situationally awesome, depending on your circumstances, and was actually a major selling point for me.

I am 99% sure it does from reading posts from m18x owners, but because it has crossfire cards, you must do a system reboot when you switch gfx.

I doubt it would be significantly faster. The 570m is designed to compete directly with the 6970m. The 485m will be a (small) step above, and the 580m will be a step above that. It is probably based on a 560ti desktop card, but downclocked. The 485m is based of that same card, but uses an older architecture. So my guess is newer architecture and a similar card.

The 6970 is a very beastly card no doubt, but the 485m does it by a slight margin. The 485m does work in the r3, with modding to Hwinfo32 for fan control. The 120hz screen works, but 3d doesn't work yet. I would expect a fix sometime, since clevo has a laptop that is 3d with the 485m

im pretty sure that the m17x is getting some new GPU(s) especially the fact they are practically giving the 460m away. (New deal on Alienware's site) i expect to see an update around 2-3 weeks. They probably include AMD Blackcomb XTX, Nvidia GTX 485m, and GTX 560m.

i cant see where u guys r all comming from with a wish of new gpu (apart from those who ordered a 6870m)
gtx 560 is rumored to cost $1k+ , are u really willing to spend a fortune on a card that performs worser than 6970m? (at least according to official benchmarks)
plus, according to nvidia's website only 560m is listed in gpu list, meaning that 580m is still in development, i would not see it comming to alienware unless alienware plans to supply m17xR3 model as well as m18x model for longer than 2 years

Many of us spent $750 on the 485M to upgrade the laptop, I returned mine because 3D wouldn't work, however.

my point was, i am trying to understand what perceives people to upgrade to a nvidia gpu like that. I don't see the answer being better gaming

Ouch that is a lot of $$$ , I thought its only a minor update over the 460M in terms of clock speeds. The 485 is too expensive for me , was hoping for a compromise offering from dell for 3D gaming. hoping to get my hands on a m17 by the end of june.

^^Yup. The old man is ballin'. I think his last rap album was platinum or something lolz :)

But yeah, I don't think young(er)bloods like us can ever understand the justification to max out specs, prolly cuz we're still poor college students on college student budgets ;)

Well I am happy for you, brother. I gotta tell ya, I have nothing to show off myself with. Even the R3 I have now I got for half its real price just doing my thing... I spent only $2500 whereas should have around 4k.
So I believe general population of forums also comes here to know the best deal for their money, biggest bang if you will. This is why I think it doesnt really make much sense to get a $1k+ gpu for your $3k system, coz that thing does not give u any benefit in gaming comparing to AMD solution and already costs like a car (which I believe is much better investment)
But ya'll know, this is just my IMO, I dont say you guys r doing mistake, I am just saying what makes financial sense to do (then again unless you plan to resell it with minimum loss)

gtx 560m costing 1k+? I seriously doubt that. 485m's were ~750, and they are Nvidia's top tier gpu atm. Akimox (can't spell) listed off in the m18x forum that the 460m=560m in pricing according to his notebook retailers.

Not disagreeing it looses to the 6970m; it looses by a noticeable amount. It still beats the 460m by at least 5-10%, plus new architecture. Better gpu means better fps for guys who chose the 3d option, and maybe better battery life (probably not, new architecture probably isn't that good)

GTX 560m is a 460m just a bit stronger. From the extra power that we know of, doesn't look like much stronger. But the new architecture may prove to make the card alot better than we think.. I feel that this card is going to priced the same as the 460m maybe a few $$ more but, the performance of the card from the released data, make it sound like a step closer to the 6970m but it will not beat it. Now from what it sounds like, Nvidia is trying to create a full HD experience with this card so 3D gaming will get a plus from the new architecture, so a few FPS for them to make it more stable. So for non-3d ppl, the FPS will be up and battery life consumption will be less with a better optimus. so its gonna be like this 460m<560m<6970m. unless that new architecture is like putting a supercharger on a car lol.

I think they already started it. The 3rd (1699$) offer looks new to me , I remember seeing only 3 offers in May (Standard , HD+Memory and 3D pack).

    Offer 1699$ "Better graphics (460M) + Blu Ray + 640GB HD + 6 GB ram"

over the previous offer (still up) which has memory and HD upgrade for 1599$

dookie11: as pp_ph said that they already have, but it is just a sale. so after the 560m is released they are probably gonna do away with the 460m and make it only available in the outlet R3s. We are just gonna have to wait and see. i bet my 2 cents that Alienware is going to make an appearance at E3 and release something like the M17x R3.2 because i think by now if it was just a GPU upgrade they would of done it by now on the website.
