Hi all. Sometimes when playing GTA 5 especially when driving around it's not very smooth. The scenary becomes juddery as you move along.

Is the 780M not able for this game? I didn't change any game settings just whatever the default in the game is. Any tips on setting? What's the max the card can go to on this game?

    Hi there,

GTA 5 is a very heavy game as far as GPU utilization and it has a lot of settings to optimize it. If the slowdowns are out of town then try lowering the grass quality. I saw a big increase with barely any visible difference trying this.

The game has multiple way to AA (anti-alias) and remove the jaggies and shimmering on distant diagonals. Have a look at turning anything with AA in the title to low or off and see what it looks like, on a laptop display AA is less of a problem IMO. If you need to add AA start with FXAA as this is hardware based and has less of a hit than any of the others. A combination is usually best if the machine can cope with it.

Have you looked at GForce Experience? This can optimize a game to your GPU and using the wrench icon you can decide the balance between performance and quality. I find it a good starting point before fine tuning.

You can use something like FRAPS to on-screen your FPS so you can see the effect. Overclocking will help that game but you need to baseline your temps before trying that.

    Good luck.

Thanks Micky for the reply, will check the setings out, one more thing. My screen is 120hz and it gives me an option to set from 60 to 120hz in the game should i leave on 60?

    NP!

Always go for 120 if you get the option, even if the game never gets that high it should look smoother.

if you can handle 30fps then i would suggest going 30fps and just max out the settings :p

I can post my settings if you're still looking. I run my 780M at stock and get ~90FPS on average.

Yes please, 90fps seems good! I set mine to 120hz and it seems to have made a huge difference to the juddering.

Alright, here are the settings I use. :D

I'd recommend vsync off (you're almost never going to hit 120FPS w/ my settings) and borderless window because it reduces screen tearing for some reason.

edit: Just ran the benchmark with my settings and extended distance scaling at max. Average FPS was 60-70 fps, with dips to ~40 with multiple on screen explosions and jumps to ~100 in scenes without a lot of draw distance (looking down on a building, etc.).

Haven't changed any settings only to 120hz and since that it hardly judders at all. I ran a benchmark test and the FR are averaging 50-70 during it. Should it be better?

I notice you guys talk about the grass settings, what about water detail as this is one that rinces the GPU.
