Hey, I want to install a new nvidia 280M driver but I'm not entirely sure how to do it. Do I need to uninstall my previous driver from the Remove Programs list or can I just go ahead and download it? Any help would be appreciated.

Well the best way to install drivers is certainly to do a fresh install. (removing old and replacing with new). Heres the first thing you need to do, since you have a GtX280M and if its on an alienware m17xr1, you will need a modded inf to install the new drivers. Take the link below, download the latest drivers modded inf, and put it in the nvidia setup directory.
Go here for modded inf, theres one for both 32bit and 64bit.
Installing Nvidia Mobile GPU Display Driver on Notebooks Upgraded to Windows 7 x86 / Windows 7 x64 - Komeil Bahmanpour
Make sure you have the latest 301.42 notebook driver.
It will continue setup and you will have the latest and greatest driver. Which by the way works very nicely. -
Will that work with windows vista?
EDIT:
Oh sorry didnt read far enough I see the vista download thanks. And should I download the 301.42 driver before I place the modded inf file into the driver directory or after? -

You first download the driver. Let it extract and press Cancel when it starts checking for compatible hardware.
Then you paste your file replacing the original one in:
C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\301.42\WinVista_Win7_64\International\Display.Driver
Go back to the "International" folder and run setup.exe
Don't forget to reenable SLi. -
Thanks I appreciate the help. And should I remove the 296.10 version or can that just be left in?

No problem, let us know how it went.
By the way, welcome to NBR! -
It says that the installation failed:
NVIDIA Update: Not Installed
PhysX System Software: Not Installed
3D Version Controller Driver: Not Installed
nView: Not Installed
Graphics Driver: Failed
3D Vision Driver: Not Installed
Thats what it the report said. Any ideas on what went wrong? -

Ok, make sure your laptop is plugged in and take a look at my post here, follow all steps correctly.
Also, you'll have to enter the BIOS menu (repeatedly press F2 key at boot/ big alien head) and navigate to Advanced > down to Graphic Settings and Disable all four options there.
Press F10 to save and exit.
This will disable the integrated 9400M and hybrid Sli, the latter is not supported any more so no need to keep it enabled. -
Make sure you have hybrid graphics disabled, and integrated graphics disabled. disable PCI gen2 cause that just does not work right at all/(will cause lockups). For some reason the new drivrs dont get along with hybrid graphics enabled, but you can turn it on later. Best way to do it is, uninstalled all previous nvidia drivers, then install the new ones, of course after you have copied the modded inf to the nvidia driver setup directory. Oh and those instructions that katalin gave are mint, that should help. If it dose not, just post any error messages you got or messages from the end of any log file.

Don't mean to hijack, but I'm having the same issue. I've done everything this thread has said (except reenable SLI, don't know where to go for that) and keep coming across where it says it failed:
NVIDIA Update: Not Installed
PhysX System Software: Not Installed
3D Version Controller Driver: Not Installed
nView: Not Installed
Graphics Driver: Failed
3D Vision Driver: Not Installed
I've fresh installed Windows 7 and everything too. Everything is new, but it's still not working.
My system is Windows 7 64 bit with 280m SLI if that helps. -
Bump. Been going crazy the last week trying to figure this out.
EDIT: I FIGURED IT OUT.
For those who may be having trouble try this link:
32 bit:
LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers
64 bit:
LaptopVideo2Go: Drivers
Download both files at the bottom and open the 30142_win7x64 file. There should be a folder on your desktop after it finishes. Copy and replace the nvwi file into the display.driver folder. Run the setup application.
It went through and failed while it was installing at first, but I just had to restart and try again. Wallah, my cards are finally working with a new driver. -

If you followed the steps i listed above correctly, there's no reason for the driver not to install.
There's definitely something you missed or skipped.
Glad you were able to install a newer version though. -
Yeah I followed everything except I couldn't "reenable sli"... don't know where to go for that. I got the same issue the topic creator was having. Ended up finding some more modified 301.42 drivers and it worked.

To enable SLi, just right click on the Desktop and access nVIDIA Control Panel, select Set SLi and PhysX Configuration from the list and choose the Maximize 3D Performance option. Click Apply and reboot your system.
