I have a GTX 285M and it runs GREAT most the time, but sometimes when playing Crysis 2 it glitches for a second and then all of sudden my framerates drop to about 1 third of what they should be I go from 45-60fps to 15-20 and stays there... And the weird thing is after I exit the game it still happens - unless I reboot. This happened in the demo, but I figured it was a bug. It is happening in the Game now too.
Is the card de-rating somehow? how can I fix it besides a reboot? My temps are fine - hottest it ever gets is 74c when overclocked heavily (700/1100/1725). I noticed it WILL stop doing this when I return the GPUs to stock clocks, but this happens in no other game with my OC settings.
Using the newest drivers 267.24 Beta, but it also happens with 266.58

Just press the report button under your avatar (red triangle) to ask for a thread delete other title chance etc.
For your problem:
Did you try to monitor if there's any CPU throttling, might not be the video cards.
Also you state that running stock GPU clocks you don't have any issue, in this case apply the OC and run a benchmark utility to see if they're stable.
cheers -
I have the same problem with my SLI 285's. I made a call to alienware, they couldn't figure out whats wrong with it so they decided to replace the motherboard, hard drive, both GPU's, and the ram. The problem still exists but I just bought a pair of 5870's since I'm not happy with nvidia anyways.

No I was having problems in games with my 285m's. I decide to solve the problem by just buying a pair of 5870's. I haven't revieced them yet their still in transit.

Also from what you described you're saying that you have a problem just because you think the GPUs are not able to run your desired clocks.
A system performs different with every game.
See if you're clocks are stable running a benchmark and then we'll talk. -
Edit
Also im not saying I have poor FPS, im having a drop in FPS issue.
And Im pretty sure its been isolated to the GPU's due to the fact that it dosnt do it with stock clocks. Can you explain if im wrong? -

Overclocking is never guaranteed on any components (CPU, GPU).
Remember that two cards of the same model(same goes for CPUs) don't overclock the same (one can go far while the other one will simply not be stable).
And
Were the temps monitored during gameplay or mesured after?
I don't have the game yet ,when i'll get it i'll give it a go on the R2.
Also you should change the thread title to "Overclocked Gtx 285 . . . . ." -

I will try when i'll get the game and come back.

I am running stock clocks and I have random FPS drops whenever I push my cards hard. I noticed it first while playing starcraft II whenever I would scroll in my maps. So I ran the GPU test in OCCT and when the temps get up around 70 the FPS start dropping from 75 to somewhere in the 20's randomly about every 10 seconds. I then tested them with futurmark tests with the same results. All with the stock clocks.

Some time ago, some of the random cases of fps drops in Crysis were traced back to the game polling every few seconds to check battery and wifi levels.
Check out this thread to see if this has anything to do with your problem. Be sure to check out the first post if you feel a bit lost of course.
Edit: It sounds like your issues are OC related though.
