I'm a 3d animation student and I use Photoshop, Maya, Mudbox all the time. I know that rendering uses the CPU and not the GPU, but if you don't have a gpu that cooperates with Maya it will cause many crashes and freezes.

Does anyone know or had any personal experience with the GTX 580 and Maya 2012? Your input or knowledge is greatly appreciated since I want to make sure that I can run Maya especially on my labtop.

The Gpu is used in photoshop and can be made to be suported, I am using adobe master suit cs5.5 fully gpu accelarated.

you just need go into all programs, open accessories then right click on Note Pad.
when Note pad open go to open file and select cuda_supported_cards it will be in adobe.

add GeForce GTX 580m to the list and save!

this enable cuda for none supported cards.

thats how it works on premier pro hopefully its the same on photoshop

all though something tells me photoshop uses open cl which in that case is automatically supported! and doesnt use cuda.

open cl is a less develped system like cuda and is suported both on ati and nvidia cards

I'm well aware that the GTX 580 isn't supported by Autodesk, but thats bull because they're just trying to push you into a $card that is only optimized for professional programs. Now if i was only interested in running professional programs then I'd probably spend the extra 100 dollars and upgrade to a quadro 300 or whatever the ~$700 card is.

I also would like to be able to play games on my labtop which is why I want the GTX 580m.

So does anyone have any personal experience running maya 2012 and using this card?
