    Howdy all.

I've been attempting to order an Nvida GTX 680m kit thru Dell/Alienware (famous last words). I know some of you have had success with this. What part number(s) did you use? I got the kit number MH8KM GeForce NV13E-G GTX680m Kit (Video Card CPCXD + Heatsink 9CNMG). Dell parts and upgrades live chat said the MH8KM kit number did not have a price for it, and the CPCXD 680m card by itself was $1,154.99 plus tax.

It's either a mistake or Dell doesn't want to sell the 680m kit to models other than the R4.

    Suggestions?

PS: the 680m will go into my R2, and this is where I got the part numbers for the 680m R4 kit: Nvidia Optimus & Alienware Laptop video cards - Alienware Forum - Alienware Club - Dell Community

If you pay that for a GTX680 you are craaaazy. :)

You can have XF 7970M with PSU upgrade for less.

You can have a kit GTX680 from upgradeyourlaptop for 725 on ebay.
Guess the owners of GTX680 can give you better answer but think this could do the trick for instance.

    Alienware M17x M18x VGA Upgrade Kit NVIDIA GTX 680M 4GB DDR5 MXM 3 0B | eBay

They sold me my first 7970M and it was good.

Yeah, like I'm gonna pay that amount for a last Gen GPU!

More than likely Dell is giving me a false price to prevent me from purchasing the 680m on my own. Each time the chat rep tried talking me into an Nvidia 280m (reman) for ~$200. Interesting they would recommend a video card specifically for my R2 when I never gave them my model no or service tag.

In any event, there are NBR users who Shanghai'd Dell and got the 680m kit for like $500. I just want to know how.

I don't want to go with the 7970m because it's not as stable, and I want this to be the last upgrade I put into my R2. I don't want a Clevo/Eurocom version because there may be HDMI audio issues and that is a deal breaker for me. I need HDMI with it's audio to work.

    Hence me dilemma.

I can't vouch for Dell US, but I tried to help a forum member out a few weeks back with getting a 680m for a 17x via Dell UK/my Dell Rep. Although we had all the correct part numbers etc, upon checking, I/we were told that 680m is no longer available for direct sale and is only available via technical support to assist warranty claims etc.

As for price, I can confirm that they ARE crazy high to buy from Dell. £2,000 was the figure quoted to me over dual 680m's from Dell UK, so I can see that the price quoted to you of over $1,000 is pretty much in line with what I would have expected.

I think your best bet would be to either get one off Ebay or try the NBR marketplace for other members selling them. I believe j95 was selling a single 680m if you check his signature - not sure if he still has it. Here's a link to his profile: http://forum.notebookreview.com/member.php?u=462874

Not sure if it's a Dell or Clevo card.....maybe PM him and ask for details!

The GTX 580M is also a solid card. You might consider the 580 as an upgrade for your 5870. You can find them on ebay for less than $200 if you keep checking regularly. The 680m is beast of a card. But for that price I would pass.

Why have to get from dell, they only give 30 day warranty at most unless bundle with machine warranty .

I have to get the Dell OEM card because the Eurocom/Clevo card still has lingering issues with HDMI audio. And I use my HDMI with audio on a daily basis. I want to get it direct from Dell so I can charge it to my DPA account.

I've had zero HDMI audio issues using a Clevo GTX 680m in my R4. I also have a spare Dell one and a spare Clevo one lying around now as I've upgraded to GTX 780m.

But the R2's do have an issue with the 680m and HDMI audio. It was only present on the Clevo/Eurocom version cards.

Why the drama with getting one from Dell? - have you even tried talking to Widezu or j95? - I don't get it....sure, you wanna use a Dell DPA account but do you REALLY want to pay THAT much just to get one from Dell? - I'm pretty sure that either of the above two members would gladly sell you their 680m, and it would save you a fortune in the process.

As for scoping someone out with expired warranty....why??? - how's that gonna help you....

Sticking to buying one from Dell, just to use DPA, doesnt make sense at probably over $1,200 - especially when I am sure that you could 'negotiate' one a darn sight cheaper.....

I have an R4 with existing warranty and a friend with an R4 with expired and we were both quoted way over $1000 for one. Trust me, it's not because they aren't willing to sell to you. That's the actual price.

^^^ Exactly. You wont get one from Dell for less than the cost of a kidney, lung or any other vital organ...

    Crap.

I wanted to get direct from Dell cause I would need to use my DPA to pay for it. But not for that price. I figured they'd get a bit cheaper with the release of the 780m.

Unfortunately, they won't be significantly cheaper.....the prices for 680m's has remained constant from Dell...regardless of newer hardware. That's why you would be better off talking to Widezu

My reason is I don't have the cash right now to get one from a third party. Hence, my need to use my DPA. You're absolutely right though. $1200 is ridiculous. As for the expired warranty, I figured Dell would sell the 680m to an R4 owner with an expired warranty at a normal cost.

    Boy was I wrong.

Yup....unfortunate but true. Dell prices are sky high for aftermarket gpu's generally. You might be surprised at how much cheaper you can get them now....I'm sure that you could maybe swing something fairly close to what you originally thought if you talk to the guys on NBR that are selling them - like widezu:

Of course, it's not DPA, and I appreciate your cash flow situation - but it would be one hell of a lot cheaper....

Just me thinking out loud here, but you could buy something with DPA and sell it to raise cash....just a thought....

That's too shifty for me. I will just have to grin and bear the Gray screens of death until I raise the funds.

Fair enough I guess....though it's not really shifty, afaik......you buy something, you sell it...it's all legit, however I totally respect your thoughts on that idea....it was just me thinking outside the box because you seem tied to using DPA.

Good luck with it and I hope you don't suffer for too much longer!

Thank you for the encouragement. It's more annoyance than suffering. But that could change with the pop and fizzle of GPU core.
