Hi, i've got MSI GTX 780M with possibly bad gpu chip. My idea was just try this gpu in my Alienware M17x r3.

After 780m installed and connected with psu adapter to the laptop the blue light power adapter's goes off and i heard something like "click". Laptop screen was black and nothing happened. I said to myself not working card than.

After that, i installed my old gpu. Since i can't use hdmi connection input with my external 24' LCD Samsung display. I've got black screen, just always "checkin signal" with no results. Tried both HDMI connectors in Alienware. With left hdmi connector display stay black with "no signal", with right switching display doesn't working. DVI-vga connection worked good. More strange is, that with IGP gpu (dedicated gpu taken off) hdmi left connector worked flawlessly. Tried a lot gpu's in mxm slot, but never got this fail. After first restart with my old gpu saw also cubes, which I saw with a damaged gpu processors. After reseating not. 3d mark Vantage worked well.

Tried reinstall gpu drivers, reseating heatsink, gpu card in mxm slot. Still no succes.

Possibly reason?: shortcut in 780M and MXM slot ruined my motherboard or mxm slot :-(

Any ideas how can i fix it ?

    Thank you guys.

You'll need to reflash the bios i believe there's a guide for it around the alienware subforums.

I flashed A12 unlocked bios to locked A08 bios. Still the same conflict with black screen on external hdmi. I buyed mini displayport to hdmi reduction. Using digital signal on my external display without problems finally.

Take battery out then hold power button for 30 seconds and after that take out bios battery and hold power button for 30 seconds - this will reset bios completly and voila, it will work :)
Otherwise just buy anotehr bios batteries in store and repeat these steps.
Worked for me with same problem

P.S. I also tried to install MSI 780m

I only got the 780m to work on my m17x r2 through the external hdmi port... same thing with the 680m though... had to flash each time... only one that worked for me was a 560m... Im not sure how high certain Alienwares can go...
