Recent purchase on Ebay GTX 880M for my Alienware 17 R5
Just wondering if the temps are good or do I need to repaste ?
Used GELID Solutions GC-Extreme Thermal Paste
Room Temp 70 F
Idle temps 38C 50C
Load Temps Min 52C
Star Wars Battlefronts Settings on High Played for about 2HRS Load 60C Min 73C 74C Max
Hopefully TEP Cooling plate that I purchased today from Woodzstack on Ebay can cool this down few degrees

Max 75c seems good to me
consider flash bios to newest unlock version

I have SLI 880M in a Clevo P570WM, which has tons of room for heat dissipation, and I'm getting 80-85 Celsius on full load with freshly applied IC Diamond and cleaned fans and heatsinks. Maybe the heatsink isn't placed well, or the thermal pads are ****ty, but I'd say you're fine at 75 Celsius. 880M's run hot because of the 8 GB RAM and the GPU boost to 993 MHz that scales back. 980M's run cooler because of more power efficiency, which is why I'm looking for a replacement, but they are too expensive at the moment.

93C is max temp for this GPU. It will aggressively throttle once 93C is hit. Anything below 80C is fantastic for an 880M. That being said, the cooler you keep it the longer it should last.
I banged mine against the 93C limit all the time trying to be top dog with the GTX 880M. Made it to (a very distant) second place behind @johnksss when I decided to throw in the towel. I think I actually damaged it. It won't overclock like it used to. So now I have my clocks locked at 993MHz. I game with either Vsyn on or simply cap the FPS with RTSS. This keeps it cool. I had one game that I like to play that was buggy and the GPU would run away on menu screens and over heat. That is when I started capping the FPS. The game maker fixed this at some point. -
But if you looked after in Hwmonitor, the card can't even touch max boost. Aka 993mhz.
-
Hmm, that's sad to hear.
Maybe not because the 8GB VRAM, but because the cores aren't binned enough and they have voltage leak = higher temp?
@deadsmiley - how is the card "damaged"? Have you tried to run with other machine or a clean driver install / windows install to see if it fixes the problem? Might also want to try reseating the thermal pads. -
880m is a very crippled graphics. He can be very happy he can obtain 954mhz with his card. There isn't many 880m who can run 993mhz. Either fully throttling or heat problems or both. Mod vBios can't fix the throttle problem. This is by design. 880m shouldn't be sold. 780m with mod vBios can run with higher boost clock and without heat problems. 880m was Nvidia's brilliant way to milk people before Maxwell!! All these 880m is ok binned. But ok binned chips isn't always the way to heaven!!deadsmiley likes this.

Yes, my ASIC quality is 88.5%. I got lucky with mine.

Svl7's modified vBIOS did help mine quite a bit. It would throttle for power limits and this helped a lot. The stock vBIOS starved the 880M for power. But if you give it what it needs it throttles due to heat. It's a balancing act for sure. I finally got tired of messing with it and left it at 993MHz and called it good.Papusan likes this.

My 880M was extremely picky about drivers (as most are). Doing a clean install and going back with the same drivers "proven" to work did not always yield the same results. I was never again able to reach core clock 1,170 MHz stable. That used to be my everyday overclock.
-
I suppose you're right.
Wonder how it
Maybe you blew out one of the vrms, -
Nvidia squeezed last remnant of Kepler. Put on 8GB of VRAM and milked until the bitter end. You find a lot about this garbage cards if you look after the forum. Not much good to say about this graphics. Ask @Mr. Fox what he mean about 880m. I think he benched a not so crippled card with ok results. But the statistics say a junky graphics!!GodlikeRU likes this.

Im satisfied with them but I run 824 MHz with 954 MHz overclock for Witcher 3 lol
Never even broke 1000 MHz -
OP we got a little offtopic here. The short answer is your temps are very good.

If I did, it's been running pretty good for the past 2 years with a blown out VRM.

Nah, you probably need to re flash it to stock. Run it that way for like a day, then flash back to modded vbios.
That card can run a bit, but it's problem is the inductors get far to hot and heat up everything else under the heat sink. Thus causing that card to black screen alot. If you keep it cool it will run like a 780M will.Papusan and deadsmiley like this. -
Yeah..., 880m was a big jump up from 780m
And people just had to upgrade from the older 780m because of the performance gain
Not only upgrade the graphics, but the whole machine

Don't make 880M war again pls. Stop offtop before Sauron will enslave us all.

War again? What are you talking about? And what is off topic about my post?
-
Topic is about GPU temperature not about 780M vs 880M, drivers, throttling etc m8
-
HaHa. All this is on topic. Heaven Far from being of topic. Maybe stepped on some toes? Just kidding. When you see that the card don't run correctly, you need to serve info!!
-
Wow, looks like your the one off topic.
-
Okay start the flame then but without me. You're good at it @johnksss as you showed before in 880M topic. Bye.
-
Everyone want that OP can have the best experience and happiness with his graphics. All good advices is welcome.
-
No need to cry about it. Bye.
Edit: So after going over your prior post in the 880 thread I see you were talking about @Ethrem and @Papusan . I didn't say anything to you a bout basing 880M's. Heck, I the very first working one. Even seen where you tried many of my methods to fix your bricked cards and many other things. So i'm going to have to say you are gravely mistaken.
Those temps are fine. As long as you are not in the 90+ range.
Also, did this work?
TEP cooling for 980M or 970M MXM Videocards
Thanks.Last edited: Jul 6, 2016 -
Wow I have to say I didn't realize the GTX 880M was that popular on the forums
For the price of $289.00 for a GTX 880M on Ebay felt like a steal
Still Waiting for the TEP Cooling plate Woodzstack just ship the item todaydeadsmiley likes this. -
Before and after TEP Cooling plate from Woodzstack GPU temps from the GTX 880M
Starwars Battlefront 2HRS High Settings
Thank you Woodzstack for great ebay purchase
Before no TEP Cooling plate
After with TEP Cooling plate installed

Thanks for providing feedback on this. Now we know that the TEP Cooling plate provides some good results.
