So I now have the 3rd GTX580M failure in my M17X R3. Performs fine on world of warcraft, no overheating, then it goes to a black screen and hard lock up after 15 Or 20 minutes. bios and drivers are current. I am assuming it is the card again. Can anyone help me? I want to know what GPU I can upgrade to safely? Help!!! I DONT WANT AN EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT!!!

You can safely upgrade to a GTX 680M, and pretty much double your performance from the 580M and increase reliability at the same time.

I feel your pain bro, i have had an m17x r4 with 675m (which is a rebranded 580m) and i've had 3 of those infernal cards fry as well, and i was looking for a solution, upgrading to 680m was one of them, but it was expensive and came with a **** warranty.

So what i did was request an extended warranty (paid), but dell couldn't fix the laptop (after a few attempts to do so), so they offered me a swap, my m17x r4 for a brand new AW 17 R3 (16gb ram, i7 6700hq, gtx 965m, win 10 64-bit), which is what i have now.

First thing you should try is repaste the card and clean the heatsink, uninstall all nvidia software and install the one issued through dell support site.

In short, the 580m/675m are known for their unusual failure rates, a 680m is a good plug'n'play option, but if you're up to it you can attempt to put in a 780m (no more 3d though) or even a 980m [edit: 980m incompatible], though you'll need some software tweaks to get them working, a cheaper and more long term safe option is to try get an extended warranty (your laptop needs to be less than 5 years old starting from the time of purchase, and the damaged component mustn't have any signs of burns or breaks or other superficial signs of damage) and then just sell the thing later on when the warranty is 1-2 months from expiration (or attempt upgrading, but at this point it's better to get a more modern laptop)

All this is assuming the first solution doesn't work.

980M will not work, R3 has no UEFI support.

Unless you get modded BIOS for it ofc it won't work.

Modded BIOS won't help, there is no UEFI support at all in the M17x R3.

Yes, the R4 has UEFI support and can run the 980M/970M in full UEFI mode only with no legacy option ROM.

Indeed.. The R4 works with 970/980M however the R3 will fall flat because it doesn't support UEFI in the BIOS..
