Correction - MX17xR3 is my model.
OS: Win 7 Home Prem, SP1
Some years ago I swapped out the overheating video card and replaced it with the GTX680M. It did require using a modded driver (and I pretty much forgot how I did that, but I think advice from this forum guided me there).
Recently, my display started having problems when trying to launch a game. Very soon after that, I could not even get it to boot past the splash screen. I've uninstalled the driver and things are better, so that was likely the culprit... maybe some update happened that broke things.
Anyhow, when I try to reinstall the old driver that I have from the previous upgrade, it says the system is not compatible. I think I have the correct moddriver.inf file, but I'm not sure where I'm supposed to stick that or if it needs to be renamed. I hacked at it a bit to no avail.
Can anyone provide me some guidance as to how to reset my driver? Or, does anyone know if there was some new update from MS or Nvidia that prevents the old driver from working as it used to? And, if that is the case, is there a new solution? And, if there is no solution, what's a cheap good driver that would work in this old alienware without being too hot like the original, and without the update headaches?
Thanks for any help.

Bump.
Hopefully somebody can help. It was based on advice from this forum that I did the upgrade, but now things are not working. -
I'd say if the old modded drivers dont work for you, check if nvidia gpu even shows up on your pc. If its not, then there is no point trying to install the drivers, you need to diagnose why its not recognized by the pc first...
