Isn't the controller in the R3 only a SATA 2 3.0gb? If that's the case i'm not sure the crucial would be the best choice looking at the specs. I was looking at possibly picking up an OCZ vertex 2 with read/write of 285/275.

Still recommend reading specification section in the manual. Curious if you are interpreting this differently or someone has stated something else.

Actually, I may have spoke too soon. I asked about the controller during a chat session and was told it was SATA 2. We all know how reliable the chat agents can be at times. After your 1st reply and reading the manual I see what you are saying.

From page 110 of the manual
    Hard drive
    two 2.5 inch SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) OR SATA 3.0 (6Gb/s) hard drives

It is the OR part which threw me off, this is why I wanted confirmation for current R3 owners.

SATA 1 is 1.5 Gbps, SATA 2 is 3 Gbps, and SATA 3 is 6 Gbps
Dont have a clue what the limits are to eSATA on this machine or even in general. And if it did take the higher speeds, does it require a special cable?

I looked in the R2 manual and it says the same thing.....just to add more confusion. ;)

And that was why I was getting confused, and also why I did not answer it directly. The manual seems to indicate M17X but does not specify the R3. No clue if there would be any difference on this spec between machines.

    ---------
Answering my own confusion on the R3 part:

Top of specification section it says:
    Computer Model
    Alienware M17x-R3

Glad I held off on buying one just yet. I'll probably wait for a better selection of SATA 3. The specs listed for the crucial drives seem to indicate low write speeds compared to some of the SATA 2 drives
