I've read it's probably a conflict with M17x drivers/hardware, but did anyone have luck in running it? All the usual fixes, like compatibility modes, fail to work for me...

Try the search mate, been covered a couple of times.
All without success it would appear -

I have tried absolutely every web solution I could find. It just will not work. Someday they'll figure it out, and it will be something we were all overlooking. I just play it without the expansion.

Too bad all of my saved games were done in The Conquerers... I seem to have the same problems with a few other games, like Commandos 3. I just wish I new where the problem lies, even if there's nothing I can do about it

Dang, Commandos...it's been a long time since I played that. If it makes you feel any better, I've gotten Conqueror's to the main menu screen before it crashed again. There's hope, but the game is so old that I doubt anyone is furiously working on a fix. Hell, they aren't even worried about fixing the current stuff.

How true...

I got this to work on my netbook before. It was running win7 x64 and I played Conquerors. I currently have a M11x-R2 inbound on the 14th and if I get it to work again I'll post how.

They've all been really good games. I hope they aren't done making them.

I think the series ended with AOEIII after that I'm almost sure the company, Ensemble Studios, closed. Sad...but I never warmed up to AOEIII like I did AOEII, game is a classic.

i gotten it to work on my m17 but it might be the dx11 hardware in the r2 that's causing this
i don't remember how i did though -
I wish it was, but it's not. Most systems running Windows 7 will have this problem. It's a Win problem (lack of patches/fixes), not really hardware related.
-
maybe i just pu it up xp mode

Ok so I'll be getting my M11x-r2 tomorrow but will be installing an Intel 120gb SSD on Wednesday. Please give me one more day lol sorry guys. I promise Wednesday I'll get my butt into gear and find that solution!

Well I made a thread on this matter too. And no, I don't believe this is Win 7 problem. I used to play the Conquerors Expansion ALL THE TIME on my old HP Pavilion dv7t running Windows 7 Ultimate. The only problem caused by Win 7 (and Vista) is false and ugly colors in-game (due to explorer.exe running), but this has since been fixed by creating a simple batch file.

Hey guys, still working on the problem. Hopefully will update soon with good news.

Thanks for your guide villosa, but sadly the game still could not be played on my M17x
(. Have your tried installing and playing the game on a non-Alienware laptop with near-identical specs (eg. Asus G73Jh) or your desktop system? Since you managed to get into the game menu on your M11x (i5 520UM, nVidia 335M), and I couldn't do the same on my M17x (i7 720QM, ATI 5870 and nothing but a black screen, age2_X1 not responding in task manager!), I strongly suspect hardware combo is the culprit.
