Hi guys. I'm geting my m17x R1 replaced from Dell. I have been having trouble with it freezing randomly and the screen going black every now and then.

They are setting it up now. They say i will be getting either an R2 or an R3. when asked if i can upgrade it when they finally decide, my tech guy said I can, but it won't be at the price that their website shows when building a new one.

Now, my question is this: If they are replacing my laptop, will it be a new one or a used one? and if it's a new one, why would they price to upgrade (say to a 6990) be more than the 300 their website says. They have to build it like all the other laptops right? Why would the price be more for me?

Also, that do you think they will offer me? I have a Q9000 quad core 2.0Ghz, 4Gb ram 1066, GTX 260m, one 320GB hard drive and a 750GB hard drive i bought from Dell not too long ago. oh, and the 1920x1200 screen. what processor do you think i'll get, and GFX card?

I doubt they'll be giving you an R2, unless they've got a new one lying around and spare parts to eventually repair it.
Depending on how much you've paid your R1 you are most likely getting an R3 with either a 6970m or a 6990m, plus an entry level sandy bridge quad core.
If they are indeed giving you an R3 try and negotiate for an M18x, arguing that they can't give you a replacement with less functions than the original, SLI/XFire capabilities, it's worth a try and some people in here have been succesful in getting an m18x for their R2.

it seems very far fetched as one graphics card of today probably can outmatch 2 of them from when the r1 got out xD
Either way use common sense Ralo90, On the website they say $300 more, because it is replacing a much newer card than your GTX 260m. The 6990 doesn't actually cost 300.

Yes but he might have paid for his the price that buys a nice M18x today.
I paid for my M17x back then ~3000$, it was almost maxed out except CPU which i did later on. A R3 is far from being that compared to nowadays models.

Fight for a dual GPU setup if you currently have one. If ever they decide upon a M17x R2, it will most definitely be a refurbished one.

    Good luck

Yes, but when I get mine replaced, they will be adding a much newer card than my 260m. That's my point, they will be giving me, say a 460m (not sure if that is the base line card for R3). So i should be able to add 300 for a 6990 like new buyers can. the only difference I see between me and a new buyer is that i already have a warranty in effect.

Am i wrong in my thought there?

Plus, I had the single 260m, so I can;t really demand a multi GPU unit...

You can't demand two GPUs, but it's in your rights to ask for an equivalent system.
You R1 was SLI/XFire capable, the R3 is not, regardless of whatever you were using it or not you shouldn't settle for less options.
Ask for a single GPU m18x, tell them you also plan to eventually buy from dell the second GPU even.

i just went through this with dell they tried to be slick and send me a R3 which was way less value than i paid for my R2 after arguing with them about it they escalated my case i sent the r3 back and im suppose to be getting a m18x is what i was told but i have to wait 15 days for it to become available

my advice to you is to stay persistent respectful and state your case as clearly as possible

    good luck

with my experience though i don't trust dell at all anymore we will see what they send me they said it was gonna be a m18x but you never know

    Hey guys.
i heard back from them yesterday and learned i am getting an M18x as a replacement. :)

my questions now are, is this a good system (its basically the base model). and they said i couldn't buy upgrades at this time, i have to buy them once i receive my new computer but i can get a discount at that time.

    my current setup:

    M17x R1, Q9000 2.0ghz,
    4gb ddr3 1066 Ram,
    320gb,
    gtx 260m,
    and the 1920x1200 screen.

they say i'm getting a good upgrade just because of how old mine was, i agree but want to know what you guys think. should i try to get a second 560m when i get it? or maybe a processor upgrade?

wow and I thought going from my 2.6ghz c2d 260m to a qx9300 4870 crossfire system was a crazy upgrade. R1 to m18x is crazy. Nice upgrade.

well.. i paid 2400 after taxes and shipping. 2200 i think before. and now im getting a 1999 machine... but due to inflation/ better parts are cheaper, i think im getting a good deal. i want to upgrade gfx, but they wont let me until i get it in the mail. then they say i will get a 'discount'... knowing them, 5%.
