Hi guys, i'm planning to upgrade to 1 or 2 (raid 0) ssd.

I may get at a good price here localy for some Kingston SSD drive. Does anybody know how good they are? I've experience with kingston for they RAM modules and they are good.

Size would be either 120 or 160 GB

    Any opinion is apreciated :)

kingston drives suck for performance...not worth the money at all...stick with OCZ Vertex II, Intel, G.skill Phoenix Pro, Corsair Force or you could wait couple months for third gen drives to hit the shelf.

Performance wise they are bad compared to other SSD but still good compared to normal hdd? I'm more concerned about reliability of the drives (one of the reasons of the upgrade). How is kingston under this point of view?

Third Generation drives will be compatible with our controllers?

    Thanks for the info Faiz23

Third gen SSDs will be compatible, but kinda pointless (I think) since they can use SATA III and the M17x R2 is only compatible up to SATA II. If you do decide to go RAID 0, check out my Intel RAID 0 setup linked in my sig. It's what I did to setup my drives for max performance, and it's my everyday setup. It wasn't setup for benchmarking numbers. That post has links to all the tweaks I used.

I have friends that have had unreliable experiences with Kingston's SSD Now series. I personally have a Vertex II that I absolutely love, so I'd have to recommend that.

So did MI9Tech ship to Mexico? Congrats. Did you decide to go RAID or just a single drive? Either way, I'm sure your going to enjoy your system a lot more.

Im also looking at SSD's - one or two. Kinda torn between wether 1 larger one is best or 2 smaller ones in raid 0 (to equal the same size) given the lack of TRIM on SSD's in raid (does it make that much difference?)

I have been looking at X25-M 160gb but dont want to pull the trigger cos of G3 drives tba.

Im also looking at Crucial C300 128/256 drives.....anyone know how they perform limited to SataII as opposed to III?

Another contender for me is Samsung 470 series...

Im in a bit of a minefield really....any advice appreciated!

I am in the same situation as you are. Do we have a date on when those Gen 3 Intel SSD will hit the market? I have only seen estimates of end of Q1

I havn't had any TRIM issues, but if you go RAID 0 check the link in my sig (RAID 0 link) It has all the tweaks I did to maximize performance on the chipset. Also I do a weekly image if my system after deleting all temp files so when I need to re-image my system, I just secure erase the drives, than re-image. It's nice because my image is tweaked and after re-imaging, I need to do nothing. My system is clean as a whistle and I have about 15 games installed.

Also, like I showed CPT Barras, check this for a nice drive. Good drive and good price. MI9Tech

I recall reading somewhere that the Sammy SSD's are the ones that Dell use on our systems if ordered - basically same drive but without all the fancy casing etc.....dont know how true that is cos I also heard that they are Samsung PM800 SSD's.....not owning one, I couldnt say which is true although I think there is a thread by Joker on TRIM support for PM800 drives, so probably the latter is used by Dell.....

dell uses samsung for its ssd oem.

pm800 are the old sammys - no special case for them - oem or retail. newer firmwares support trim, some older firmwares can be updated. there's a whole thread about it. model # starts with MMDPE.

pm810 are the new sammys. these are the same as the 470 series. the retail ones come in the fancy case with the orange. oem ones don't. same drive internally. model number starts with MZ5PA. all support trim.

the pm810 drives are faster and have much improved 4k performance.

that still does not answer the question of how the Samsung 470 series compare with the Vertex 2 that Faiz was suggesting

Got a question for the X25-M experts!

Ok, so I think this is a good deal. Just need some clarification.

Found a seller who can do me TWO X25-M 160gb SSD's for £400gbp delivered. Brand New and Sealed.

They are "bare drive" only .... Model number SSDSA2MH160G2C1

Checked out Intel website here Intel® Solid State Drives, Features which shows at the bottom all the various codes. Indicates SSD only so no fancy cables/install cd/etc

Question is, Do I NEED any of the extra blurb or will this particular "version" just fit into my M17x without the need for any of the other stuff?

Also, do I NEED the install CD?

Seems like a sweet deal to me but wanted to clarify these things BEFORE I take it further.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Thanks Guys.

Personally, if I ever do an SSD install again, I'm going with a brand that ships with updated firmware. My OCZ experience was "less than" satisfactory thanks to my inability to update the FW.
