    Hi

I have M17x R4 with AMD 7970m and 17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD screen. I'm going to upgrade to 980m and have few questions.
    1. The screen I have does anyone know if it's gsync? I guess it's not because works on 60Hz and combined with 7970m. How to check it?
    2. Which 980m should I order ID 13D7 for Clevo without gsync or or ID 1617 for Dell ith gsync?
    3. I have dell A13 bios shoud I unlock it or it would work on stock bios?
    4. After I have the card with me should I update vbios or stock bios is ok?
    5. Which driver is ok to use with card?

    Many thanks for help

I had many research about this topic, and I would jump to a GTX 1060 or a 1070 the performance is much better and the price is almost the same.
You have this information in the forum.

    Thanks for reply.

The difference is price. I could have 980m for 330 euro and 1060m cheapest found for 430 euro.

Do NOT get a gsync card. It will force you to use Optimus only and you will NOT have gsync enabled. No way to support gsync on m17x r4. Better to get non gsync card

I have the card. Came fairy quick processing and then by dhl in 8 days. I'll try to install it tomorrow. I need thermal paste - ordered Grizzly Kryonaut but haven't received it yet. NowI have the X-bracket but no screws. I guess screws from 7970m won't match. I read somewhere thatI need M1.6 x 3.5 or 4mm screws. Can I use 7970m bracket? Could anyone confirm this, please?

Also which drivers are the most suitable for the card -353.00?

I have no idea which vbios is on I know is non gsync.
My m17x r4 got A13 bios- do I need to unlock it?

    Thanks for help

    Hi all

The card us in. It's recognised in bios as Nvidia GFX

Now I have a problem with drivers as expected..
I have tried with 353.62 from nvidia - no card recognized.
Then I modified .inf for dell and the install process has started but then failed.
I have tried nvdia 391.35 drivers and the installation was successful but after restart there is code 43 in device manager so card is not working.

Now what should I do next. I just wast to have it running on default settings for now. I'm not really interested in OC at the moment as I have no time.

If anyone reading this please give me some advice.

    Thanks

Ps. I have just noticed there is A14 bios for M17x R4 should this be installed or hold on for a moment?

You have a gsync card. I contacted the seller from ebay who sells that particular card and they said it is a gysnc card, it will never work in PEG mode, you must use SG + optimus

make sure you have unlocked bios. do not update to latest BIOS it will cripple your CPU performance. Go to advanced -> video -> select SG (not PEG, not PCI, not IGFX, not AUTO)
make sure your intel hd 4000 drivers are installed and make sure you reinstall nvidia drivers

In all honesty return the card and get a non-gsync card.....

Latest you can get unlocked is A11 : https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/1516-m17x-r4-unlocked-bios-versions/
Gsync cards need gsync panels to run the signal to, unless you use the iGPU to convert the signal. more or less a giant headache for us people without gsync panels. return the card if you can. I actually have a spare Dell 980M non-gsync I can sell you if you manage to return your card.

Hi. Now I have a bigger headache.

Firstly I have installed unlocked A11 bios from tech inferno.
Then set up bios so my system started ok. Then I tried to install several drivers from 353 to 391 with no sucess. During every installation it was 'unsucesful'. So I started ti explore unlocked bios options and changed video config from SG to PEG. After that restart computer and bricked. It starts for 2 seconds with black screen then restarts and nothing just black screen. I have pulled iut 980mand tried to clear Cmos ( obviously there is no jumer on mobo but some stupid combination). I have put in 9790m back in but atill the same.

    Any help on this.....pleasee

I'm with laptop working back with 7970m for now.
It was weird experience. After I set up video ->PEG basically bios bricked. Nothing worked. I tried to run without any video card, removed all rams, didn't touch processor. I couldn't hear any beep because about 2 years ago I had disconnected speakers as there was a short in them and very annoying noise all the time - since I only use bt speaker. Still black screen...

    Then I tried this:
    https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/1525-m17x-r4-bricked-bios-fix/&

    Still black screen.

I thought I'm done so I bought the programing tools for bios from

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...7x-r3-r4-owners-lounge-thread.669251/page-578

And at last I thought that maybe there would be signal on hdmi out. I don't have any tv or any tv like equipment so I connected it under projector and it started just fine with default A11 unlocked bios... Weird.

Anyway worst stress behind me now.. haha

I still cannot figure out why 980m couldn't install drivers.
Maybe because I have used from 385 and 391?

One more thing I noticed. While 980m was in it was vhit even thou I wasn't working. The processor was also warmer about 65 deg instead 45 deg while web browsing..

    Any ideas?

It's summary from the other thread (Copy Paste :))
    "
Whoever is following the thread and for anyone who may consider it as help.

Now finally I have completed the installation of the card. Eventually I had to send back 980M because of code 43 that couldn't be resolved. Thanks to @woodzstack who was trying to help me as much as possible on PM, he even asked me to send him a card to look after and sort out. Unfortunately there was to point to do it as the cost would be very high. So.. I have been refunded for 980M from China and bought 1060M from @woodzstack for very reasonable price. The card came within 5 days from Canada to Ireland. I have put the card in run modded drivers and the card worked nearly perfectly. The only thing was it wasn't switching (Optimus switching problems) so all games were using Intel HD4000. The problem was in drivers or rather modding the drivers. Again @woodzstack have sorted for me and sent me nicely modded inf file. After that is switching great. I've been testing the card for last 4 days and all games running on high or ultra settings with 60fps capped. Firestrike result is around 9400pts.
Summary that may help anyone who want to upgrade their m17xR4 to 1060M.

My system is running on Win 10 Pro with FullHD 60Hz (non 3D) screen, i7-3630QM, 16GB Ram, 512GB SSD + 2TB HD and now with 1060M 6GB. The nVidia drivers I have downloaded from nVidia website 397.31 (latest for this moment) and run with modded nvcvi.inf by @woodzstack which enables Optimus to switch easily. The Driver must be installed witth DSE disabled and run as Administrator.

I hope this will help someone.

And yet again big thanks to @woodzstack who was a great help and support. Very easy to communicate and helpful.
    "
@Raidriar thank you for initial help and good word
@aconix You were absolutely right about 1060M, less hassle better performance but a bit more expensive

I told you @Ziggydi, I study very carefully about this topic lol I was about to do this upgrade but I had some extra expenses =/ but I hope I can make it next month...I can't even play Dead rising 4 with the 675m

I'm happy that you are satisfied! You have a powerful machine now, better than most of the laptops around the market with huge prices

    Hi

It's working great for last few months thanks to @woodzstack .
Gamewise playing Alien on ultra capped at 60fps, Wtcher 3 maxed(except hairworks) capped at 60fps (7970m at medium on averegae 15-20fps), now playing deus ex mankind at high (not ultra) 25-35fps, all games at 1080p native resolution

That's wonderful and thanks for your reply. Did you need to buy a new heatsink or any other stuff apart from GPU? I'll buy a thermal paste and GPU, that's my understanding from reading and researching thus far.

No need for a new heatsink but you have to modify 7970m with a dremel. I have used a drill with dremel tips but it was painful and took me about 2hrs. With dremel would take probably 30mins (rotation speed). Ask @woodzstack for the thermal paste and pads and I'm sure he will make a upgrade kit with everything you need. get quality paste/pads. My card usuly dont exceed 70deg.
