    Hey,

So i recently spilt coffee on my Alienware M17X R1, Specs:

    1ALIENWARE M17X : BASE SPACE BLACK
PROCESSOR: INTEL CORE 2 EXTREME QX9300(
    DISPLAY :17IN WIDE UXGA (1920X1200) - B
    MEMORY : 4096MB (2X2048) 1333MHZ DDR3 DU
HARD DRIVE : 500GB FREE FALL SENSOR (720
OPTICAL DRIVE : SLOT LOAD BLU-RAY ROM CO
GRAPHICS : SLI DUAL 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA? GE

I rang dell and luckily under my CC warranty I got it taken into dell hospital.
It was beyond Economical repair so they offered a replacement..

    The specs are:
    Alienware M17X R4
    PROCESSOR:IntelCore i73720QM (6mb Cache, up to 3.6GHz w/Boost 2.0)
DISPLAY : 17.3" wide FHD WLED LCD
    MEMORY : 6144MB (1x2048 + 1x4096) 1600MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    HARD DRIVE : 500 GB 7,200rpm SATA 6Gb/s HDD
OPTICAL DRIVE : SLOT LOAD BLU-RAY ROM CO
    GRAPHICS :2GB GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 675M

First off was i right to accept this offer?

From what i can tell the rest of the system is a mojor upgrade but the processor im not so sure about,
What is the opinion of this processor?

I think my old GPU setup was SLI 512 Mb which made it 1 GB, they didnt make it clear from the description but i think they are giving me a single 2GB 675M, is that a fair deal? and could i upgrade to SLI?

Also i had over a year of CC left on my old rig. Because i claimed they have said that it meant i could not carry the year left to my new machine, are they allowed to do that?

Also on a final note, they sent the old machine back, it returned with far more physical damage than i sent it with, i know it was a void product but are they allowed to return it in such a way?

    Thanx

    Tom

instead of a 675m .. ask them for a AMD 7970 .. its 50$ cheaper and the best cards available (other than the 680m) :p so they might just do it for you :)

    No

cant say anything. try to haggle around :p

No they aren't allowed to bust your laptop just because it is old. Old or not you spent your money on it so only you can do that, I think you should mention that to the rep you are talking to .

Honestly take the offer.... and try to haggle and ask for the 7970M instead of the 675M.... the R4 will DEMOLISH the laptop you currently have.... be smart and take the offer and just get the warranty by yourself or try to haggle but honestly that's such a huge upgrade that i don't see why anyone wouldn't take advantage of it.

The difference from an R1 to an R4 in terms of spec is just insane...

That is a very insanely generous offer... Take it!

So I'd better keep my R4 untill R7?

Sadly i already accepted the 675m, i already accepted the laptop i more put this post up to see if i had made the right choice.

And im taking full advantage ;P cant wait for it to arrive.

The other option was to sell it straight on as new and use the money to get an M18X but to build the same system would cost 2,200 so i am going slightly against that.

    I did :)

Until R7? what happened to R5 and R6? haha

Why could it not support SLI?

I will mention it, See what they say, i just dont want to push to hard and jepadise my new build

It won't support SLI or Crossfire because it is a single GPU rig. The M18X is the only AW system with dual cards.

The M17x is now a single card laptop. It pretty much replaced the m15x, while the M18x is the new M17x. In other words, M17x R1 and R2 were dual cards, but the R3 and R4 are single. Only M18x has dual cards now.

I see, did this give any advantage to the system taking away SLI capability?

Also does anyone know if it is standard practice for dell to return the old system to you when they are giving you a new one?

It was a lot more than i was expecting tbh and as much as people like to about dell customer service they do get you sorted and fast if you lay the pressure on them in the first few days

Overall, I think it was a good offer. I would have pushed for a GPU upgrade, though.

Also, a note about SLI - memory doesn't work that way. Two 512MB cards in SLI do not effectively use 1GB of memory. They can't access each other's memory, so all the data is stored twice, once on each card.
