After spending some time researching and managing my budget I got this setup. What do all of you think? Anything that I should change?

Please however note, the HDD will be changed as time passes.

I'm planning on applying other discounts and programs to reach that 20% one way or another.

Yup. That's gonna be a nice machine man. You didn't add any frills. I personally don't see the need to spend the extra dough on a blu-ray player, but that's personal opinion. I don't watch movies on my laptop.

    Hi Merk1b2

*black is nice but Red is ubber attractive and turns heads. Have seen both black and red side by side.
*Home Premium does not allow you to network to office or other home computers
*SSD has mind boggeling boot times and game starts.
*If you are using wifi go with the ultra card, faster
*If you already have a blue ray player you probably won't enjoy blue ray on a laptop. Blue Ray rentals are not cheap. You also won't get HD sound. The lap top has 2 speakers.
*The most significant advantage of a 64-bit system is that it can use more than 4GB of RAM. 4 is fine but more if you have a lot of applications open at same time.
*If you order red also order the red glyphs wallpaper to match.
*the only exception to the Blue Ray comment would be if you plan on buying a 1080P video camera. In that case you need the blue ray player to video edit AVCHD which requires blue ray for playback.
*Blue ray blank disks are like $20 each.
*AVCHD(1080P format) uses regular DVD disks but requires blue-ray playback.

Very nice spec's, only thing diff I'd do is what other posted said I'd trade the Blu-Ray for Intel 6300 wifi the Dell is realy slow and a longer warranty. I dont see the difference between reg DVD and Blu-Ray on a 17 inch screen not enough anyway.

Thanks for all the advice and replies, hear some of my replies to you. (I had a longer post made up but then I pressed exit instead of minimize)

I agree that the red color is the best but I do want to use other LED options on my keyboard and they will all look odd but red.

With warranty, I plan on getting it yearly to reduce the base price.

With OS's, I have a spare copy of professional that I'm planning to use the next time I wipe the system.

Thanks for the wifi info, switched to the more expensive one without any heavy dent to the overall price.

I do need a blu-ray player for reasons here and there. Made a list but then lost it for reasons on the first sentence.

    Thanks you all!

When you are sitting in front of your laptop you only see a 1/8" edge of red aluminum along the edges. The keypad and handrest are all black so all the color leds look equally as good. I like blue just as much as the red one on my system.

Alienware has stored your factory configuration on a partition on your drive. If you do a clean install you will lose that feature.

I really love Dells Call Tag for looking up drivers but it is very time consuming as they list multiple hardware drivers including drivers for brands you may not have purchased.

In order to get HD sound from a blue ray you must use HDMI cables. The speaker jacks will not output HD sound. Has anyone tried using their alienware m17x to playback a DVD on a home theater using the HDMI jack?
