    i7-620
    RGB WUXGA
    4870XF
    4GB memory
    300GB HD

    $1391 shipped

Was hoping for the 5870 but none available. I can upgrade the CPU and ram if I need more horsepower for VM stuff. I sometimes run XP, Fedora and Unbuntu at the same time. Any recommendations for memory?

the processor is good only thing better will be 920xm which will give you higher raw speed and quad core. Look at getting a SSD really helps speed up performance especially if you are running multiple VM's. Good grab and a great price as well enjoy the system and especially the RGB breathtaking

Any ram is guaranteed to work. I've tried hynix, samsung, corsair, and a bunch of others. They all work. Make sure you get 1333mhz rated modules since your cpu is capable of above 1066mhz unlike your previous dual core. ;)

I'd suggest ebay as you can get a decent pair for around $160 or possibly less.

SSD is a good option but I've been avoiding them because they seem like prototype products in my view and as an Engineer. In addition I was really hoping the technology would advance more and prices would drop towards Christmas, as projected. But it doesn't seem to be the case at this moment.

If I do consider one, what are the best options for a speedy and reliable drive? OCZ and Intel seems like the best two choices?

Thanks. Took only two weeks to find one that I liked. Figure this one will hold up until a "stable" version of the m17x with 6870's come out. Nephews could use a gaming laptop :)

same drive as OCZ vertex II or G.skill phoenix pro. Sandforce controller and amazing speeds but reliability is not comparable to intel. I have a vertex II in m15x and phoenix pro in wife's macbook no issues with either and getting good speeds overall

Going to try to find a red model if possible. Can't shake the feeling of wanting one. It shouldn't matter but it lingers...urgh.

There is little reason for anything above 4GB of RAM. Save that $160 and put it towards an ES 920XM or an SSD. Those are two upgrades that I guarantee to make your system scream, unlike 8GB of RAM.

Multiple VMs, video/music editing when I find time, and the rare occasion to use 3D CAD. Otherwise 4GB is plenty fine. Been doing a bit of reading again on SSD's and I think I'll wait.

I seriously cannot understand any engineer purposely releasing products with "bad" firmwares. If I or my colleagues did this we be embarrass with no end in sight. I mean we really fight/argue with CO's to not release anything that is "questionable." I even fight with my colleagues when testing fails and they don't fix the problems!

However, having said the above I understand and have experienced workplaces where management gets their way due to cost, schedule and such. Software is usually the first to go and man I really hate having to test and qualify them for release. Worst of all, I abhor signing off on the release since I'm usually the last person to do so.

I think I'll just call up frieds at Intel and get their honest opinion. At this point it's just baffles me on the SSD issues, particularly firmware. Sorry for the semi-rant.

Anyone with detail technical SSD experience/design wanna shed some light to the issues?
