    Hello folks ,
I have been running my gtx 580m on my m17x r2 for two days and it puts up so much heat, the temps are above 94oC while gaming , I did three repaste up to now, two with MX-4 and TIM Mate , but still over 94oC.
I did even flash the vbios to gtx 675m but temps remain same.

I removed the stock screws from dell and installed aftermarket ones on the heatsink so it would put good pressure on the Gpu core.

I have two gtx 580m's , I tried both of them in my m17x r2 but issue persists.

Is there a way to undervolt the card so it won't go that high .
    Thanks

Hi, I feel your pain with that GPU, I had 2 burn out and a 675m.

The pressure of the heatsink is controlled by the x-bracket post heights, not the screws so you want an original x-bracket for the 580m.

Another thing on that card is the VRM's at the edge. On the original dell pads there is a thin (~3mm) strip of a putty like material on them. I have seen people double up on ordinary pads to reach them. Temps on these components regularly run in triple digits and the heat will transfer to the core if it's not bled away by the heatsink.

This post has a ton of details but is a little large  http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...8c°-throttling-see-post-191-and-later.648538/

You did remove any tape around the core area on the heatsink?

    Good luck.

    Hi,
That's bad , I see these card fail due to the heat eh.

Where can I find a bracket for this ?

I have a xplate which came with r3 but it also has a small metal part to cover one side of VRAM chips , I guess it won't allow it to fit in r2 ? Can you confirm ?

I have a 3mm pad over it but it doesn't make good contact with heatsink , will it transfer heat to core ? Are you sure ? I have seen it's temp rise along with Gpu core temp and few degrees higher than core.

Haha thanks for the link il have a look at it.

It had a silver tape on it , I removed once and put it back, with it removed I didn't do any stress tests I had an impression that it is present to avoid heat transfer to the keyboard , or melt the led cable.

    Thanks mate

It should fit just fine, it's designed to fit the card not the model of laptop.

The tape; It serves no purpose except to mark the area that needs paste, and alcohol cleaning (if we are talking about the same tape). If you put it back then this may well be all you need to sort it out. The different core sizes will end up with that tape stopping good contact.

You do need to ensure good heatsink contact on the VRM's, 1mm bigger than the actual gap is where you want to be so it could also be the VRM's causing it.

Maybe just a combination of all three, x-bracket, tape, padding?

Il install that and see what happens.
But for what I can remember I wasn't able to install the card with that xplate that's the reason I changed it.

Oh no I don't have that black tape , im talking about the tape which is over two heatpipes(center part of heatsink).

Looks like the vrms as you said ,il add another 1mm pad over the 3mm, it would work right ?

    Thanks mate

That should do it. I don't understand why the x-bracket won't fit? It's only .5mm (or less) thicker than the VRam. If there is a big pad under the card then maybe a cut-out to allow for that heatsink (for want of a better phrase).

I thought we were talking cross-purposes on the tape - resolved :D.

Have a look at the spread of the paste when you dismantle. It should be squeesed out to a very thin, almost non-existent, covering. Any more than that and contact pressure IS an issue. maybe take a pic or two after opening and I'll comment on those?

    Good luck,

Yea , im not sure why it didn't for the first time I tried .il try to swap the pads underneath the xplate and see if it makes any difference.

    Ha ha it's solved now.

It spreads really good, very thin and to all areas. Il take some pictures when I remove her again today .
Yea you can tell me how it looks for you .

    Thanks mate

So the x-bracket then. Great news, I'm sure it will be good but better to have someone look at it ;)

Good idea. If it's cooling fine (and another issue on an R2 is fan profiles) then he should not see higher than 70c at stock clocks. At 72c random problems can occur. Some games give problems, or some benchmarks. At 76c you have a problem that needs fixing. At 78c it throttles back to a minimun clock.

We'll see how it went :D

    Hey, sorry for the delay.
I did install the xplate that came with my gtx 580m no change in temps , then I took off the heatsink and replaced all the thermal pads and noticed that I have forgot to cover up the vrm that on side of the board so gave it some thermal pads , I had to use the gtx 285m xplate because it did few degrees below the gtx 580m xplate.
Also with gtx 580m xplate the card would not fully seat to the board hence keyboard would be pushing out .

Now my temps are 89oC max at 79A load with 0.87v core .
But my card doesn't throttle , I don't know why but it doesn't I keep a eye on clocks and it stays steady all the time even if temps passes 97oC ( earlier ) .

Also I did lift the back of the laptop by two inches from table so more air would circulate .

Il let you know how it goes.

    Any other suggestions?
Also I took a picture of thermal paste spread but what is the best location to upload it, since in on my phone il upload it later.

    Thanks mate

No problem, as long as it works, those temps sound horrendous to me, but if it isn't throttling then use it while it lasts, those 580's are not known for their longevity.

Set up a free drop-box account. Easy to share links and data between devices and others. I just tried this one and liked it. Even dell are using it to distribute the latest bios and driver updates on the AW Arena!

Hey , I couldn't deal with this gtx 580m lol so I went ahead and placed an order for gtx 970m through RJTech .
I will install the card on my m17x r2 and tell other fellow members how it does.
If it doesn't work I can still use the card on my m17x r4 . But it should work for what I guess.
    I'l keep you guys posted.

    A wise decision ;)

Good luck, should be OK but it is a dice roll unless someone with an M17X R2 jumps in. At least you have a backup plan

Told ya.. You have to be proactive with these sellers if you want your products quickly.. Did the same with Hidevolution and I had no problems while people like Billy who weren't so proactive had a nightmare of a time.. If you stay on top of them like wolves, you can make sure they don't screw up or screw you over..
