bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
gonna want to downgrade to the A08 bios to get SATA III instead of the SATA II that comes with the latest bios (A09).
-
Just like i posted somewhere else; my favorite and best way (imo) to update drivers is this french site Easily explore your PC , just hit the Run the Detection button and install the device detecting software if prompted and when the scan is finished hit Download drivers compatible with this configuration; then a page will be displayed with your hardware and their respective latest drivers
i use this to fix most computers after formatting a hard drive, i only need to get a driver for the internet and then i go to that page -
Sata 3 hmm,
Benefits? -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
if you have a SATA III SSD, it will bottleneck at SATA II speeds which are quite a bit slower than SATA III. If you have just a standard HD, it shouldn't really matter as you won't be reaching SATA III speeds.
-
SSD speeds.... epic performance on sata 3
-
I got no idea if i got SATA III :\ -
Easy way to check is with crystaldiskinfo, or look in device manager and look up the hd in the Internet

Did you get a machine with a solid state drive? If not, it really doesn't matter as a standard Hard Drive isn't as fast. -
Heres what i found Seagate Momentus 7200 750 GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 16 MB Cache 2.5 Inch Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive ST9750420AS Is that Sata 3?
-
^^ No that would be SATA II - All mechanical HDs are SATA II or less. Only SSDs can reach the dizzy heights of SATA III.

Revelator, can you run steam apps with 295.51?
-
You can install Nvidia's normal drivers on this right? But ONLY because he's got the "3D" screen so Floptimus is disabled?
Haha...I'm still debating what to buy... -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Those Verde drivers (meaning notebook drivers) are Nvidia's normal drivers and work fine regardless of whether you are using 3D and/or regardless of whether Optimus is enabled or disabled. Using Custom Installation, you can select the 3D Vision driver package if you have 3D, ignore it if you don't. Or, you can install everything indiscriminately, and it will still work fine. The Nvidia drivers are much less finicky to install than the AMD drivers and tend to be much more stable. No kid gloves required.
@grat'zt - haven't been on Steam since I installed the 295.51 drivers. Wouldn't expect any problems. Have you heard otherwise? -
Yeah, that's why I love Nvidia, but my impression was that those normal drivers were flaky or might not install with Optimus. I don't want Optimus, but also don't want to have to spend extra on a "3D" screen I don't want to avoid it.
I keep hearing horror stories about still having to use hacks and stuff to get their normal drivers installed on Optimus systems? -
yupp, a ton of people have their busted, all games are giving error 51 at launch, but for some reason some people doesn't have this problem and there is no cure in the web for this (yet), this is weird, first time ever a driver I installed killed an application (well, two actually, skype was also dead)

@ Wolfpup -- I can tell you that such stories are BS in my experience. You can also avoid the entire Optimus question by setting the primary display to the 580M (PEG) and disabling the IGP in the BIOS. That eliminates Optimus, and the R3 looks and performs like a single card 580M setup, which it is at that point. That's exactly how I'm running at the moment.
Edit: it requires an unlocked system BIOS to properly disable Optimus and run the 580M exclusively. Easily done. -
Wait...you can?!? I thought Dell didn't have that option in the BIOS? I could swear I've read posts on this forum with people talking about how they wish you COULD disable it, but Dell doesn't allow it?
Are you sure? I mean...geez...I've been avoiding it this whole time ENTIRELY because of Optimus LOL
Heck, I'd have probably bought an R3 over my LAST system if I knew you could just disable Optimus in the BIOS and install normal drivers!
That brings the cost down for me too, as I don't want/care about "3D"..... -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I promise you it works quite easily with an unlocked A08 (or A04) BIOS. Takes less than a minute and doesn't even require a reboot.
Dell technically does not allow it through the stock BIOS, but through community efforts (and the expertise of the good folks at BIOS-Mods.com), the BIOS has been unlocked to expose that and many other options. -
Sorry, I'm sure I'm being annoying, but what do you mean about unlocked A08 or A04 BIOS? Is this like a hacked thing? Oh, yeah, I guess it must be? I kind of hate having to resort to that for a new system, though other than Optimus (and the to me ugly front grill of Alienware stuff), their stuff is perfect for me!
But you say you CAN install Nvidia's normal drivers on these with Optimus anyway without hacks/issues? And the "3D" one would lack that...though cost me hundreds more I'd MUCH sooner spend on pointlessly buying a faster CPU
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Those were my thoughts exactly. Well, the unlocked BIOS is a hack, but a very good one that is well tested and widely used. All that the unlocked version really does is expose options that are present but hidden in the stock BIOS. It is also easily reversible if you are uncomfortable for whatever reason, leaving Optimus disabled (if desired). It just gives more control over your R3 and increases its flexibility.
I have had absolutely no problem installing Nvidia drivers on my R3, regardless of whether Optimus was active or not. The R3 display driver installation problems have almost all involved AMD drivers for the 6900M series, because of the need to always install the Dell drivers first in order to install drivers for the IGP and resulting difficulties when the user tries to update the 6900M drivers with more recent AMD reference drivers. The R3's with Nvidia cards function differently. Each card is installed and updated separately, so the AMD-type issues do not exist. Really, driver installation is not an issue, at least with the 580M. That's the only one I've had.
Guys, can anyone link me to the latest drivers
