I'm not sure about those but I do know if you want dual 6970s then you want them as a clevo crossfire kit. Mythlogic sells the clevo 6970's for $880 plus shipping so contact him if you are interested. I personally went with the 6990s since they were only $40 more.

Yeah it's unfortunate that pkhetan isn't currently selling these, he really does provide the best prices and best service. :(

If you do it yourself or buy it from somebody that did the upgrade, yes.
No, in case you want to order from Dell as these cards weren't officially released for the M17x or the M17x R2 only for the 3rd revision and only in single card configuration.

Hopefully...I've sent my cards to a member of the forum to test in his machine just to rule out some sort of odd compatibility problem. If it doesn't work in his machine either, then I got another set of cards with a broken crossfire port. They both work individually (and bench very well singly), but really am hoping to get crossfire going.

    Thanks for asking :)

My HD6970M's arrived on Monday. Ive ordered some thermal compound and pads from the US as the UK has a rubbish selection in comparison. I wondered if anybody has some top tips for applying the compound (with pics maybe??) to get the best temps out of the cards? I've ordered the Shin Etsu compound abd Phobya thermal pads, 1mm thick too as I read on ichme thread further down that the 1mm pads performed better than the 0.5mm pads.

mmm Actually i found that 0.5mm pads will make the heatsink a perfect fit on the card, leveled and not levering on the close by memory module becouse of the thikness

When I've applied the paste (which unfortunately has been many many many times at this point) I've gone with the spread method. I'm using OCZ Freeze which tends to be about as thick as the Shin Etzu paste. And after attempting several methods, I've found the best (and easiest) way, was taking a plastic sandwich bag, putting my finger in it, and then spreading it with the bag. Some folks prefer to use a credit card or something similar, but I found with the thicker paste that it tended to stick a bit more to the credit card and not spread as evenly (maybe it was just the way I was doing it however).

Regarding the thermal pads, I'm using fujiopoly 1mm and the temps have been really good. I've heard some folks get better results with the .5mm, but I've been happy with the 1mm size. Pads are easy enough to swap out however if you decide to go with a smaller/larger size in the future.

Good luck to you, look forward to hearing how it goes.

Update: I've installed both the 6970M's now, however i seem to have a problem, when i load up CCC to see if i can enable crossfire the option is greyed out (CCC 11.8 installed), so i clicked on the information tab, the last tab out of the lot on the advanced view mode, i then went to hardware and it states the two cards the primary first, however when it lists the second card it says adapter disabled???????

Im not sure why.... I dont know how to enable it, HWiNFO64 picks up both adapters as well as system information, so i was wondering if any knows what the problem might be?

    How about in Device Manager?
See if GPU-Z sees both and check what vBIOS are you running, is it the same for both?

Right ok, ive checked device manager, both are listed under display adapters as working. When i go into GPU-Z i can expand the box at the bottom and choose between two AMD Radeon HD 6900M Series adapters, each one i choose displays the same BIOS Version and all boxes remain identical.

Then it has to be one of these:
    Video driver related
    CF ribbon
Faulty CF connector on one of the cards.

Well ive checked video driver and they both have same versions aswell. I have two ribbons and tried them both before i raised the issue but the problem has persisted??? :(

So i take it then that the CF port is buggered????

I went from a single 5870 so im not sure wether that may have any baring on the issue?

Video driver installs for both cards, not one version per card.
What driver version are you running? See what others use as I don't have these cards and can't help you here.

My driver version, same on both cards is: atiumdag 8.881.0.0 (Catalyst 11.8).

Like katalin_2003 said, what has anybody else got to try and help me rectify the problem?

    Hi Jonny,

I'm currently fighting a similiar problem. Both cards show up, but I'm unable to get crossfire to recognize. Have had both cards sent in and new ones sent to me with the same problem. Ordered another crossfire cable, but no luck. Currently one card is out for RMA (as the connector looked damaged), but the tests have come back that it works fine.

My next step is sending my cards and cables to a fellow forum member who currently is running two 6970's to see if one or the other is bad (or both cables). I will say both cables work fine with my 4870's. And both my cards and cables have been tested in another forum members system with the same results, so I don't think it's specific to my laptop. As soon as I get my card back I'll be sending them off and will let you know my results.

I should mention that I've tried various bios levels to no avail, so I'm left with the current card port being bad (looks fine, but doesn't mean it is), or BOTH my cables are bad but only on 6970's.

If you come across a solution PM me, and let me know what you did, I'll do the same, because I've been struggling with this for 2 months now :(

Also I should mention I've reinstalled windows about 4 times now, but if you haven't tried a clean install it "might" be worth it. If you have a spare drive or something to just put a base install on and see if that works. Didn't work for me, but I was running out of ideas.
