HDD RAID 0 Vs. SSD -> For Gaming

How does the two setup compare for gaming loading and frames? For R2 I mean.

I am really pushing for raid 0 due to size I can get for space, but will SSD make any higher frames over the RAID 0? Im sure loading program could be bit faster, but I was wondering if having faster HDD would make games run smoother.

Most here opted for ssd as their main drive and a big non ssd hard drive for the 2nd. So, ssd + 750gb hdd seems the general setup.

Fps is based on the gpu + cpu(aka vid card and processor). storage drives isn't involved as far as I know on fps.

 

No, you will not see any jump in fps. Loading times are significantly faster though. Heck, everything is faster. The laptop feels 'snappier' I guess you could say.

 

Games will only be affect as far as framerates go, by the GPU, and sometimes the CPU. HDD/SDD will only effect load times.

to the op: SSD won't increase FPS.

 

The one possibel place an ssd could increase fps is during a new texture load - if the texture in question not only was not in graphics memory but also was not in system memory either. IF the frame is waiting on that texture from the hard drive, you'll get it quicker with an ssd.

Quick summary: no difference in avg FPS or peak FPS but possible improvement in min FPS under certain circumstances. in general, no difference

 

question. the ssd would run the os right? so my games and steam would be installed on my 750... but that means they wouldn't load fast, right? now i could put a few on the ssd, but the 750 is to hold my games, which is totals to way over the amount my ssd (if i had one) would hold. so would a ssd really help gaming even though i don't have games on it?

 

The idea is whatever you want to load fast is put on the ssd. The 750gb is for storage of other files that you have alot of, specifically media stuff.

Like my plan once I buy an ssd was to put the OS, Sc2, Witcher 2, Crysis 2, and a few other games onto my ssd so they load fast.

 

At this point, i am just going to use HDD Raid 0. seems like during the game play there isnt much difference. I need at least 700gb for program installing...

 

jesus... what kind of programs are you running that are 700gb?

JUST the programs. games and editing suites.

FTW, good explanation. You will notice this type of FPS drop mostly with MMOs and online games that are constantly loading new textures.
