    Hi folks.

Im sat here with my lovely new laptop in total peace and quiet with no other sound at all and i can just make out some slight whistling/high pitch noise which is intermittent about every second or so....its not ear piercing or audibly very loud....keystrokes can be heard above it.....and the fans....but being new to AW, i was just wondering if its normal to hear such noise from the HDD....its certainly not loud but if i can hear it and well, its kinda like a very mild beeping/scratchy noise which you wouldnt hear in any other environment....but as its dead silent here, i can hear it and wonderd if this is normal/acceptable noise??

I expect to hear some noise as its a mechanical drive but its like a kinda very quiet whistle and would like to know if this is normal/expected with a mechanical HDD such as mine....its coming from round about where the enter key is located.....

    Hi Stevie

Sounds like your new reinstall came heavily fragmented. Windows 7 has a degrag tool but it is very slow. Try Diskeeper 2010.

are you sure it's from the HDD? GPU/cpu whine is pretty common in these computers, and it sounds almost exactly like you're describing it, a faint high pitched noise. The intermittent nature could just be throttling.

It is very very feint.....when i put my ear to the keyboard it appears to me that it is coming from around the enter key/backspace area so im not sure what lies under there...
Like i said before, its not loud at all - just very quiet and slightly noticeable in a silent environment.
Best way i can think of to describe it is like when you try and phone a fax machine but nowhere near as loud! - and keystrokes and the fan are more audible.
Having read a bit, it only concerened me as i thought it may have been coming from the HDD.....ive got a few days left of my return time so i wanted to know if its normal before i get in touch with AW

Like i said, it is very very feint....The noise i can hear can be heard if you put your ear right next to the number pad....kinda like morse code but faster .... is that just the HDD accessing info/doing its normal thing? - perhaps becasue i was sat so close to it in a room with no oise at all, i could hear that and its nothing to worry about....

Maybe its just me being ultra paranoid......

That's the cpu/cpu fan area. Under the keypad area lies the second gpu/gpu fan.

After reading your last post several times, I can say mine does the same noise, which is clearly the mechanical noise of the HDD in operations and under (heavy) load.

Mine isnt under heavy load, its just sat at the desktop but it really is only audible when you get right up close to it.....i can only just make out the noise at the moment....nothing major, just like i said , very very quiet "morse code" type noise.....certainly not a whine or high pitched/loud sounds....

Maybe its just me listening for noises too hard as its bound to make some noises as its a mechanical drive i guess.....

from the backspace area? Well that's not too far from where the CPU is, and also close to one of the GPUs. It could very well be a CPU/GPU. Like Lozz says, the noise sounds like what you are describing.

It really is very quiet and yes, coming from by the backspace/number pad area......if i put my ear right on the number pad, i can hear it whirring away with tiny little high pitch noises/beeps kinda like morse code......

In a really quiet environment, i can hear it by just stiing normally infront of it.

Is this something thats wrong or can be corrected as if so, as i have only had it less than a week, i will call AW and address it with them.

If it is cpu/gpu whine, is this normal with the m17x-r2?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1Pmqy4T8JM found this as an example on youtube.....mine is nowhere near as loud as that!

one of your 5870's is right underneath the number pad, it's GPU whine. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it. It's common in nearly every high-powered computer today.

specifically, it's coil whine, sometimes after a couple heat cycles the noise diminishes or moves into a less annoying frequency as the materials change, but otherwise you're stuck with it.

Well, like i said, it aint loud at all really, i think AW would laugh in my face if i said i wanted to return it and have another (whichh could possibly be worse).
As its commonplace in highh end laptops, i guess, like you say, its something that i have to accept as part of owning one....

Just wanted to check if it was normal or acceptable or wether something was indeed faulty (as i know nothing lol) - thanks for the advice,

Oh and another thing.....anyone ever noticed that the sound that happens when you click your cursor over something like when you open pages on the web (start navigation its called in sounds) , sometimes it clicks as it should and makes the sound and then oher times, just a glitchy noise like its tried to make the sound but couldnt!

same here, under the number pad, high pitched aggravation. Normally I close the lid and run two external monitors. When at the kitchen table using the laptop on its own its very irritating.
