I have a M17xr2 with a 120gb ssd everything worked great but need some extra space for games. So I went out and bought a Toshiba 500gb 5400rpm drive. I got it hooked up and started up my computer. It showed up in the bios without a problem. Got in windows and I didn't see it in my computer. So I open disk management and create a new Simple Volume, everything worked fine. The partition showed up in My Computer so I created some new folders for my programs to go into. So about 10 minutes later I restart my computer after uninstalling some programs off my SDD getting ready to put them on my HDD. When I get into windows the Partition was gone from My Computer, I pop into disk management again the drive still show up as partitioned. I delete the partition and tried to create a new one, but I just got the windows loading circle for about 10 minutes before getting this error " The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up to date. Refresh the by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer"

I tried refreshing it and restarting several time to no avail. I pulled out the HDD and plug it into my desktop, and it showed up right away. I could partition and format without a problem. I went to dells site and made sure I had all the up to date drivers for my laptop " which I did" Next I checked the bios where nothing seemed wrong. I checked all the setting and nothing look like it was preventing the drive from working. I really need to get the drive working on my laptop, Any help would be appreciated

Your checklist seems to be complete enough. I dont know if there is a way to configure the new disk with a master/slave toggle (i guess SATA got rid of that). Since it booted up before I dont think it is a master boot record confilct.

Saying that, see if you can use a Boot CD to see what a low level test of the drive will pick up. Next I would check the drivers used in the device manager when the hard disk is loaded. If they are not generic microsoft ones, it might be a confilct. I have also heard Intel chipset drivers cause issues here and there, but I dont know if that is the case.

Lastly you an try to attempt a low level formating of the HDD. It might get the boot sector to accept it more readily, but these are all guesses at this point.

Sometimes my disks just like to blue-screen me for a day, and the next they are fine for 3 more months. I can never figure out what is going on there. I wish you luck! Let us know how it turns out.
