I know this question is all over the internet in various forums, but after much searching and many attempts at solving this problem with many different solutions, I decided that I should just ask you guys. Judging from the general posts on these forums you all know what you're talking about a lot more than most.

Anyhow, I have tried re-installing the IDT Audio Codec (yes, the HDMI is set as the default playback device). No sound. I read that the video cards were actually causing people trouble, so I figured I'd give it a try and i downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver for the GeForce GTX 285M. Upgraded, but still no sound. I figured maybe updating the BIOS would help, and I upgraded to A09 from A08. Nothing. I've tried about every simple fix I can think of. Sorry for posting a new thread on this popular problem but no one seems to have it as bad as I do apparently. No other solutions have helped.

    Thanks in advance!

Does the video output to the tv properly?

When you set HDMI as default playback device, make sure you restart the player you were using or else it wont take effect.

Yeah the video output is golden after I adjust the screen size in the NVIDIA controller. Just no audio whatsoever. I'm running it into an HDMI hub that is connected through my Denon 7.1 receiver. & I've been checking it with iTunes & restart it every time.

Sounds like the same problem I was having with my M11X...

    Plug in the HDMI cable
    Open Control panel
    Select 'Hardware and Sound'
    Select 'Sound'
You should see your M17X speakers shown and also your television speakers.
Simply select the television as the deault ones

If like me your television speakers were not shown, leave the HDMI cable attached, and restart your laptop, when it comes back up, I could see the television speakers, and set them as the default.

    It's now working perfectly :D

Let us know how you get on

yeah I tried all of that. I sure as hell have never seen a TV under my playback devices. No matter how many times I restarted with the HDMI cable plugged in. & I right-clicked & looked for disabled devices and all - it's not there. I'm absolutely dumbfounded.

The next thing to try is running the cable directly to your TV. Eliminates other possible issues like bad hub or hdmi channel on reciever.

Thanks. Let me know how it ends up & if you have the same problem. & I'll try directly to the TV even though I really wanted the sound to come through my A/V receiver.

I think you should hook it up to your tv first to make sure that you don't have a faulty gpu or incorrect settings...if it proves to work then you know that its likely the receiver that isn't being detected and hence no audio output, although you should be able to force hdmi audio out when setting it as the default device

my thoughts exactly. When I edit the settings in my nvidia controller the name of the external device shows up as my Denon AV receiver. And I thought the exact same thing - setting it as default should force audio through the hdmi. But apparently something isn't adding up. I may just contact support and see if they might actually have a bright idea or two.

Some Tv's do not like to work with the HDMI out on NVIDIA gpx cards. In noted for the 260.99 driver NVIDIA says that audio will not pass through the HDMI cable to Phillips TVs. Would you like to guess what kind of TV I own :(

Did you ever get ahold of support? Or try going directly to your TV? Give us and update, we're dying of curiousity. I haven't tried going to my Yamaha surround, but I have gone directly to my LG, and my brother's Panasonic. Both worked fine with audio/video.
