Or after the cool factor wears off will you plug it back into the TV? HDMI-IN is for hooking up a console to your laptop.

i could've used a HDMI in for the R1/R2 as i'm taking the screen while playing and my wife can watch her tv stuff on the laptop
So i think it won't hurt to have it.

yes, 32" TV/monitor baby

Why would I want a HDMI in? - ive got a blu ray player in the machine, nice screen to view things on, external monitor (hdmi out) for seeing things bigger and expanding my desktop.
In my opinion, its kind of "gimmicky" just like 3d....i apreciate that some people may find it handyto hook up their ps3 etc to it but for christ sake, its an AW latop....do yourself a favour and use it as such instead of using it to play console games....i find it quite "embarassing" that AW have created such a thing so that people can play console games on it....I mean, whats the point in owning an AW i ask ya? lol - go buy a ps3 and a big tellie ....

The plugging consoles thingy i find it useless myself but plugging your TV decoder can be nice, instead of turning your TV on in your lazy days
huh?

The HDMI-In would be kind of useless for me as well, but my laptop travels often. I would love to be able to just plug my PS3 into it. So far that's the only thing attractive to me about the R3. Until I see some benchmarks anyhow.
-
i can plug my macbook air into it. or use the psp2 whenever it comes out with it. that would be cool.
-
I can't see why i would ever use it, I travel with my AW Toy and most hotel rooms have HDMI input panels with the TVs there

Not even a little bit.

I'm in Montana USA. The TV's around here and Wyoming are lucky to have the yellow RCA input. No, I'm serious.
-
I'd be able to use both my consoles with it. And I'd prefer it that way, to be honest. Particularly if the sound works over HDMI, and within Windows, so that I can use my G35s with them.

I just like the idea of that kind of all-in-one-ness. The small LCD would help a bit with the lack of antialiasing on the consoles. I've thought it was a pretty sweet idea ever since I saw that the x7200 had an option (or at least a slot) for it. You can't say that if you had the option you wouldn't at least plug something into it to see what it was all about!
-
It's was a big selling point for me. I have purchased XCM Vbox adapters to play my Xbox on my laptop screen. I've been wishing for this to be available natively.
My family's always on the big screens. Additionally, when I take my consoles to a buddy's house I could leave the monitor/HDTV at home and just bring my AW.
One thing I'm not sure it will support is video capture on the HDMI in. It'd be nice if it did but I'm happy with using another hi def screen for my consoles. -

I would use it. I'd love to play my PS3 on it especially when going to a friends house when they dont have a good TV. Im sure there will be other uses for HDMI in.
-
There are things to play games on other than my R2? My 360 ends up sitting under my TV, collecting dust, unless I decide to play ODST or Reach. Those are the only exclusives I seem to even slightly care about anymore.
The laptop itself does everything soooooo much better.
As far as the hooking up the cable box thing goes...meh...the stuff I watch on TV I don't watch with my fiance I watch on Hulu/Netflix. Otherwise the TV is 42" (I miss my 57") and is always hooked up. HDMI in is just another -mostly- gimmick. I can see that some people might have a use for it, I just don't. -

If it can be there then why not, better extra than less.

I dont have any issues with it simply being there as an addition but i really fail to see the huge "fanboi-ism" over it....its just a way to watch something on the small-ish monitor of your laptop....thats it. If i wanted to watch something other than my laptop, I would hook it up to my LED 40" hdtv and be done with it.....why squint at a 17" if you got a big tellie!
-
I can see myself using the HDMI-In on occasion to watch DirecTV HD 3D channels (ESPN 3D and n3D) on the 17" 120Hz sceen (w/ glasses). My DLP tv isn't 3D compatible and I'm definitely not going to upgrade my tv just to get 3D. Who knows if 3D will even be around in another year or two? If the HDMI input on the M17xR3 will allow me to watch 3D DirecTV channels without having to upgrade my tv, an added bonus.
-
Can you really see yourself playing xbox on a 17" screen? If theres no tv available, most wouldnt bother bringing a console.
I dont even game on my display, I connect a 25" monitor.
I do however like azcoyote's idea of using it for the 3d tv and movie display.
Would have to watch whatever it is by yourself though. -
IF I was interested in 3D (which is basically the point of this HDMI port), I would rather play 3D PS3 games on my LED 17" monitor I've already paid $3000 for than run out and buy a new 3D TV LED as well.
And there's no such thing as a "big screen"... If it's the same resolution, then the perception of the size is relative to your position. Want to turn a 17" monitor into a 50"? Slide it forward on your desk. -
steviejones133 Notebook Nobel Laureate
If you want 3d for your console - get a 3d ready large screen HDTV....why the heck is it SOOOOO EXCITING to plug it into a small 17" screen?...pssshhttttt - I really dont get it.....maybe you could watch "Jaws 3d" on your laptop too.....its probably still just as dreadful as most modern 3d gimmicks these days anyhow!
-
I don't know if I was clear enough, what I meant was a 50" TV from 10 feet has roughly the same viewing angle as a 17" monitor from 3 feet. -
Yeah, but its a lot more comfortable gaming on a 50" plasma from the couch... Especially on console. Sitting that close to a little screen seems absurd since must would already have some sort of hdtv bigger than 17".
If youre in a small college dorm then maybe. -
UHM, if you want the universe to implode!!!!! Macbook indeed. It wont get any faster. lol -
Wouldn't use it.
(should have made a poll) -

The HDMi input it's not limited to plugging consoles and it's not a result of any "fanboi-ism".
It can be a useful feature, per example you have your broken screen on a laptop that supports HDMi out,use the HDMi
input feature of the other one for different reasons. Why be against it as this feature won't stay in the way of anything. -

I'm going to use it for 3d ps3 games. Don't want to buy 3d tv
-
There are quite a few times where I wish I could have had an HDMI in so I would say yes I will use it just not often.
-

I agree with Joe - technically, anything "better" or "improved" is a good bonus - I just personally dont see it as the major selling point of these systems.
-
It just dawned on me that it would actually be kind of cool if the Keyboard and touchpad or just keyboard has a USB out cable as well so that I Could hook up an external desktop without monitor and keyboard to the laptop and use that for gaming if I were to require a higher GPU or CPU for instance, could be kinda cool actually.
-
i would use it for my ps3. i don't even own a HD tv, just a old 4:3 480i TV.
-
just noticed you were from michigan, now i understand. GO BUCKS! -
I have tried to post this topic in other forums as well with little to no replies.
My point essentially is that if machines like say the HP Envy advertises(demos) using examples of watching 3d sports, where exactly is that content coming from. An HDMI in would allow me to hook up direct tv, i.e. espn 3d (no tuners available that would play 3d).
Now I don't believe I need it; however, I honestly would not buy a 3D laptop without it. You have severely limited content available, other than gaming which makes paying the extra for 3D not really worth it.
As I have in the last year bought 2 new flat screen led's for my house, if I were to want to introduce myself to 3d it would be in laptop form since I am due to buy one within the next month or so anyway.
And now I find myself waiting to put my money together to get the AW because it is the only 3d laptop with one (currently).
Thanks for finally being discussed somewhere. -
I would have loved HDMI in for the R2. I don't have an HDTV so I'm playing my 360 on my Alienware by way of a TV tuner card. HDMI in would have been much simpler.
I was going to buy a Clevo X8100 before I ran across the incredible deal I got this Alienware for. The X8100 had HDMI in. I was really looking forward to that. -
I am in the military so having a HDMI in would be awesome to be able to plug a xBox 360 into. We don't get alot of room so having the HD screen and not have to worry about "sharing" a tv or packing an external monitor would be great.
-
I'm not a console gamer, and, although I like playing racing games on consoles, I'd rather spend the $50 for an Xbox 360 controller that will work with my PC than spend the couple hundred on an entire console + $60 for each game.
Long story short, no I probably wouldn't ever use the HDMI In port other than the occasional "Hey look what I can do" moment plugging someones phone in to my computer using their mini-hdmi port or something. -

I thought there was 1+ second lag using this method? How well does it work? What input are you using from the XBox to the tuner?
-

-
With the PS3, I have NBA 2K11 and for the Xbox 360 I have Black Ops. Both should be 3D TV ready. -
-
Something like this will also be awesome for us video recorder junkies. I'll be using it to screen my videos recorded of my Sony 1080p HD camcorder.
-
-
^^^ I fourth the idea about deployment needs. Plus everyone is forgetting that you can use it for your desktop PC!!! And its always good to have another screen for that, plus if 3D works with hdmi -in, then you can get some very high graphics above what the R3 can do.

It appears the HDMI-in is not compatible with 3D sources. -
100% definitely
-
Curse you Wheeeeeeaton!!!!!
Sorry I don't know where that came from. -
The HDMI in is actually one of my main reasons for buying the R3. I can hook up a mac mini and have a kickass gaming experience while being able to also have a nice display on the go for developing iOS apps.
HDMI IN - Will you really use it?
