I connected an XBox 360 and it worked perfectly. However, I my attempt at using stereoscopic 3D with Black Ops did NOT work. The screen displayed the side by side stereoscopic rendering side by side as it does on a non-3D capable display. However, it may be my cable since I don't have any HDMI 1.4 cables.

So would an HD TV tuner suffice for this function on an R2, or is there a good bit of lag? I'm pretty jealous of the R3's HDMI-in capability, I won't lie.

Is there such thing as a TV tuner via HDMI/VGA/Displayport? That'd be hella nice to watch TV from my R3 as well :p

LOL! Nice. Yes, I imagine that the R3's display will be much better than that monitor.

I would not use this feature, however if its something that is already a capability of current GPU's there is no reason to not implement it.

So I hope it catches on for other laptop manufactures as well.

There have been atleast a few threads where people were asking how to hook there console up to the laptop screen over the last few years. So yeah the number of people that need it is probably very small, but if its a free bonus then add it.

Now if they are increasing the cost of the unit due to this feature, then I think its best left off or added as an option at additional cost.

So what I want to know is how it works. Is it a capture device, or is it directly going to the GPU?

Will it be software dependent where only program X can view/capture the input?

What will the resolution and refresh rate be like?

    Will there be any lag?

For those who were wondering, did more tests with HDMI IN:

You can still use various FN combo keys while in HDMI IN mode, including FX on/off and trackpad on/off. The HDMI IN DOES SUPPORT AUDIO (great news). Only problem with it is I had to use overscan to get it to fit the entire screen.

HDMI input is a pretty darn cool feature! I would love to have that on a laptop. When there is a holiday marathon of "Real Housewives of XYZ" and I want to play PS3 or XBox 360, I can't always get access to the TV. The boss lady has control of the remote and she's not too crazy about giving up the TV for the rest of the day so I can finally finish Final Fantasy XIII. I could drag the console into the computer room and plug it into my laptop and game all day without bothering her. :)

I have the PS3 plugged into my desktop monitor right now but it doesn't have builtin speakers so I have a cheap set of computer speakers rigged up. Also I don't get access to that unless neither of the kids needs/wants to use the desktop.

Plugging all of Dad's toys into Dad's laptop whenever Dad wants is pretty appealing. :)

I've hooked up my xbox 360 and cable box to the HDMI in so far. Color and everything seems good, doesnt seem to be input lag or anything of the sort, Ill update later when I play around with the feature more but it seems to work well.

Has anyone tested xbox or ps3 in hooked to an external monitor?
Or a step further, will we be able to use the wireless display with an xbox hooked up?

THIS and Optimus/switchable graphics are by FAR the features I most looked forward to in the R3.

Can you describe exactly how HDMI-in works? Do you plug in your device, and THEN hit the Fn+combo or does it automatically switch to your device (e.g. PS3/360)? Also, can you control the volume somehow? And what about the computer itself, does it go into standby, shutdown, or anything? Ppl said that you have to use the FN+combo to use HDMI-In, but does HDMI-In work when the computer is off (i.e. like a regular tv)?

    Lol @ Message title:

    "Alienware On-Screen Display-HDIM-IN"

when you hit the key when no HDMI is plugged in ;)

    EDIT:

I believe the HDMI-In is software controlled and is a "tuner" of sorts. It's only accessible within Windows and Windows stays running.
