    Hi,
Recently, I bought an AV to HDMI converter in hope of playing my old consoles on my laptop. However, I can't seem to get the HDMI input to work. I was able to get it to work roughly 1 month ago when I played on my friend's xbox on my laptop. The cable and the port itself does not seem to be the issue, seeing as how I can use the HDMI out port just fine (same port). This is the newest Alienware 17. I already have the latest NVidia driver and there's no "unknown device" in my device manager. Every time I press fn+f9, it would just give me the message "please connect HDMI input device". I've already searched for possible solutions, but nothing seems to work.
    Thanks in advance.

    BUMP

Looking back to the post, I realized I've omitted a lot of information. About a month ago, shortly after playing on the xbox, my friend dropped the laptop. Only the hard drive was broken, I'm not entirely sure if this can be responsible for the HDMI. If so, can my warranty help me repair? It's the base plan.

if you did not get accidental coverage you probably wont be able to get damage claim. But you should call tech support and let them at least look at it.

Before sending it in, check to ensure it's not a driver or Win 8 issue. I know on the R4, the HDMI in stopped working on many 120hz screens when Win 8 came out ...a fix is yet to be found although someone suggested disabling the driver just before plugging it in (or something to that effect). Just a heads up as maybe Windows updated or something??? Hope you figure out the issue; best of luck!

does the HDMI in work on other devices? also is the converter actually converting an analog signal into a digital signal or just changing the adapter?

Tech support will never know you dropped it, just call them tell them about the issue and suggest a motherboard swap. Because the hdmi in port isn't working.

I've been able to get the HDMI IN to work with an Xbox 360 - but it doesn't seem to work with a Chromecast

Then most likely that is device support issue. It may not work with the hdmi revision the alienware has.

There are certain devices that won't work with that port. Adapters aren't usually the best way to stream video to it. Can you test with your friend's XBOX again?

HDMI input also does not work on my M18x with Chromecast for some reason. The HDMI input on my Dell XPS One 27 AIO does work with Chromecast. I know it's off topic, but I think Chromecast is the slickest $35 gadget I've ever seen. I love it and we use it frequently with our TV to stream YouTube from our Android phones for family/group viewing. Chromecast doesn't really add much value to using a computer--essentially redundant and unnecessary--but for smartphones it is fantastic.

It was on my lap when I was sitting on a couch, then my friend took my hand off of it, causing it to lose balance and fall from my lap. I can confirm that the converter itself works as it worked on HD TV. Also, I tried connecting my old laptop to project into the Alienware, but to no avail. I even tried cutting part of the HDMI cord off since I've seen some cases where the port itself is too deep for the cord to reach. That did not work either. Suppose I were to send the laptop to Dell for the motherboard replacement, how long will I have to wait before I can use it again? Also, what alternative methods would you suggest I use for streaming from my wii, then?
