    So I have the m17xr3 with 460m/3D with Windows 8x64
    I want to plug in my xbox into my laptop, but as soon as i turn on hdmi in, the xbox screen flashes for barely half a second, and goes to a black screen.
    I have googled this issue, and discovered that this is a issue with nvidia's drivers. Unfortunately, I do not wish to downgrade to 280.xx because of the drop in performance (esp on win8).
    I have even tested the registry edit with the 'disablehpdfakemonitor' on both 306.97 and 310.61, to no success

    Are there any work-arounds for this problem?

    Unfortunately you might have to downgrade to the lower driver version...at least for the time being. It's surprising the HDMI in function is having issues with the Nvidia drivers. But then again...Windows 8. I've searched but haven't found any work arounds because not too many users with Windows 8 have used the HDMI in function yet. The way it's supposed to work is once an HD signal is detected via the input port, control of the display should switch directly to the GPU firmware bypassing Windows entirely. That's the only way the HDCP handoff was set to work for that function.

    Just out of curiosity, what do you use HDMI in for? I guess the only thing I've considered is for the Xbox. Too bad it doesn't have a keyboard output, like a built in KVM switch.

    I really dont wanna downgrade.. im not sure how a downgraded version of the driver would work with windows 8. Despite not requiring any fancy graphics, a downgraded driver might experience problems with the new start menu and some metro apps. I'm going to try to get my hands on a monitor with hdmi capability to see if I can avoid this entirely, but this is quite an inconvenience

    Btw, thats really interesting to know how the hdmi in function works. thanks!

    @svoshark
    you can use it for, lets say, an xbox, ps3, blu-ray player(if you dont have one built in),etc. The hdmi out is used far more often, but hdmi in is still a very neat and useful feature to have.

    I think the issue might be related to a lot of incompatibilities here. Windows 8 is not fully supported by DELL on your platform therefore the drivers on the website will not be available for you and those are the ones that work better on your PC. Besides that Windows 8 works differently with the Video Drivers and you might need to rollback to a previous version that might work awfully for you. The best thing to do here would be to get back to Windows 7 and the DELL drivers for a better compatibility but anyway I also found this thread that might help you. It works for Windows 7, why not Windows 8?
