    Hey everyone,
Yesterday, I disassembled my laptop in order to install a 1080p screen. The screen works very well, but at school, I usually have this set-up where I connect my xbox into my laptop so that I can play video games with my friends. However, the HDMI no longer works, it just shows a pitch black screen and I connected my friend's laptop to my laptop screen and that too doesn't show anything. Do you guys know what I might have done wrong or messed up on when re-assembling everything? Perhaps the motherboard doesn't support 1080p for display? I'm pretty sure I re-connected everything, but I'll get to it over the weekend/break if you guys have any suggestions on what to do.

I have 1080p ands working in both r3 and r5.
    wich aw17 you have?
It cant be due of uncompatibility.
It's an disconnection or it might be driver. Try to delet all driver with dduninstaller in safe mode and reinstal them to be sure about driver: intel and nvidia. Or maybe there is a specific driver in motherboard for hdmi but i think its nvidia who handle that if someone can confirm this..

I mean, it could be a disconnection, but I don't understand why it would still say that "HDMI in ON" if something didn't connect properly.

    Edit:
Also, can you walk me through this whole reinstalling intel or Nvidia driver? I'm a bit scared uninstalling and not having it to work for me anymore.

    Update:
In attempt to reapply the 900p screen, I accidentally messed up plugging the motherdaughter keyboard cable (it got burned up a bit and a portion of it is melted), and now my laptop won't be able to turn on and makes beeping noises. My laptop is out of warranty and I need to get it functioning before break ends (April 6). I'm really desperate and I feel like I need to send this to Dell, can anyone help me or send me any contact information for someone from the tech support department who can help? I called customer support and they said they couldn't help me due to the fact that I'm out of warranty. I would really like to get this fixed ASAP and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sadly it seems you fried (of course) the 900p screen I would simply buy a new 1080p screen and have a buddy or yourself replace it... because out of warranty work is going to cost you big big time.

Well, the screen isn't fried, it still illuminates when I turn it on. The keyboard also still lights up. I just know that the only physical dis-figuration of my laptop is the mother-daughter keyboard cable. But I don't know if I should risk buying one off ebay just to find out that there's also another problem. I'm not sure if I should send it in for repair.

Would you be able to show us pictures of the damage you are referring to? Also did you burn or melt anything on the motherboard.

Also, nevermind the screen still functioning, I must have mistaken it for the reflection from the blue keyboard lights

ok, 8 beeps= error with the screen or cable connected to screen
didn't you inverse the edp and 'normal' connection screen?

if your keyboard is full blue.. it just reset light. it will be back to your selection if you system can boot to windows.

I'm not sure what your question is saying. And the keyboard is my selection because it's pulsating, which is what my theme was. But what would you recommend I do for the time being then?

your keyboard cable is broken so you will need to buy a new keyboard ( you got light because there are 2 connections: one for keyboard keys ( broken) and one for light keyboard ( no broken as you got light)

8beeps system means to dell system: error regarding screen.

You can unmount back your system and check or change with your 1080p screen, the 1080p screen matte reference for aw 17 is:
    LG Philips LP173WF1
    id :Monitor\LGD02DA
If you got that one, your screen is good and hdmi is just driver error.
( check also if you didnt mount your screen into edp port. ) edp port is only for 120Hz screen.

If Dell don't want to give you support because you're out of warranty, your only solution would be yourself. But thats strange because they should accept to fix your system with a price...

Well, they can offer me a one time service but I'll have to wait until monday to contact them about it. And that's a real shame to hear about the keyboard because a while ago, I manually replaced the touchpad myself. I don't believe I can just buy a keyboard without having to buy the whole palm rest which includes the touchpad unfortunately... And I bought the screen from http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/Dell/ALIENWARE~17/ and it's the screen with the item id of 724591. I know I didn't mount the screen into the edp port so that shouldn't be the issue.

    Update:
I decided to disassemble and reassemble again. My laptop works, 100% functional. I'm not entirely sure how, but all of my programs work. However, the problem with the HDMI in still prevails, which leads me to believe that the screen just simply doesn't support it for some reason. Do you guys think I should send it in to Dell to get this issue resolved? I'll attach photos of everything in the next post.

first picture: what happens when my screen attempts to display the HDMI in
Second picture: Verification that the HDMI in at least recognizes when a device is sending signal
third picture: picture of my 1080p screen
4th picture: picture of the 900p screen that came with my laptop

If anyone can figure out why it's behaving this way, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Good to know you succeed now.
    For HDMI:
-Uninstall all nvidia driver, restart and install again the last one from nvidia: 347.88
-look in device manager or hwinfo64 if there isnt an unknow hardware.
    -does the hdmi out works?
If its only hdmi in, i think you might download a driver from dell to replace old.
-update bios to a14 ? Risky but might help idk.

I did everything you suggested except replacing a driver from Dell. No success. Do you know which driver I'll need to replace exactly?

i think if hdmi out is working, it can only means it should be a driver or something as the port is responding
But tell me..you tell us you got a black screen while putting hdmi in: so it means there is a connection answer after you push the button for hdmIn right?
Can you try with another devise? Like another computer..Maybe it's just your xbox who got not compatible settings for your old screen. I had a weird issue like that with my old r3 with ps3 if i remembered well...

In the picture provided, I connected my dad's laptop to my computer which has definitely shown to connect in the past. Should I reconnect the 900p screen again? It's really time consuming and risky so I'm not too keen on doing it, but if I have to to prove that it's the screen, then I might do it. Also, when I say black screen, it's not off, there's a clear difference between my off screen and my black screen since there's still a little bit of light from it. At this point, I have no idea what else I can do, seeing as how I did everything you told me to do.

Well the safest things you can try its installing another hdd/ssd and reinstaling ws on it with all cd/dvd driver provided. if it's working it was a driver, if not it's the screen or bios or motherboard broken..
-Try also uninstalling, reinstalling Alienware On-Screen Display.

I did the HDD/SSD window and it didn't change. However, I re-applied the 900p screen and the HDMI in does work again. This confirms that it was the screen all along. It saddens me that I'll have to return it and hope for a refund or exchange screen in hope that the next one they give me does work. Regardless, thank you for your help, I really appreciate it man.

Also, before I do exchange the screen, can someone from Dell verify that the motherboard for the 1080p screen is the same as the one for 900p screen? As well as drivers and whatnot?

Alright everyone, I installed the new 1080p screen and it worked!
