I know that the HDMI in the m17x r3/r4 is an input and i've seen owners use the m17x r3/r4 monitor for their ps3/xbox360.

My questions is can you use the HDMI In to watch television? I'm not talking about connecting a Coax Cable ( the one with needle in the middle of a cable) where it will requier a tv tuner. I'm talking about DirecTV or Comcast HD box where they only use HDMI cable.

Remember you can use a computer monitor with hdmi in to connect a directv hd box or cable box to watch television, and M17x r3/r4 has an HDMI In so it should work right?

    Anyone test it yet?

    Thanks

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Give it a try and let us know ;)

Tell you what I'll try it out right now.

Yep. Works just fine. An episode of True Blood just came on lol. Comcast Motorola black HD-DVR box. Hope that helps.

Edit: One note - I do have to adjust the output settings to 1080p (my tv is 1080i only) otherwise, just like my PS3, the video output is messed up. But once that's set everything is ace.

Thanks for the good info, How is the quality though? Is it vibrant and clear like watching high def on a real television? Does the audio come out on the m17x speakers and are they clear?

Reason i'm asking is I want to watch real close in a small 1 bedroom apartment and i'd love to be able to record tv shows directly instead of using a TIVO or a separate burner media for the television.

So watch any tv show on m17x r3/r4 via hdmi in and directv or comcast cable box via hdmi cable, can i also record it directly to be saved on the HDD/SDD of the m17x?

    Thanks

The video is good not great. It displays in widescreen format but every channel I tried is letterboxed. High def channels looked pretty similar to standard def, but that's not to say they looked bad. Rather, that sd channels looked better on my laptop than I expected and hd not quite as good as I'd hoped. Tweak some more settings on the cable box and it might improve. Audio comes through clear and nice. If it was my only tv, it wouldn't be perfect but I'd be happy with it.

You should be able to watch anything with a hdmi cable, period. The function on the laptop acts like more of an on/off switch in the hardware than anything, so there's no real compatibility check. As far as recording goes, so far nobody has figured that one out. From some posts I've read around the forum, the hdmi in port connects to the monitor pretty directly. Even though it can be switched on and off through a hotkey combo on the laptop, right now there's no way to access the feed itself. That might change, I dunno, but it's beyond my paygrade.

I tired plugging my Comcast HD DVR cable box into my HDMI-In the other day and it was acting unusual. In the beginning it kept switching back to the desktop display instead of the Cable box after a few seconds.

I also could not get any sound to come through my laptop speakers from the cable box.

My first impression is that this is the cable boxes fault (because these motorola cable boxes that comcast uses are notoriously ). But just in case its not... any idea of why I would not be getting sound?

It might be that your cable box isn't set to send audio through the hdmi port. I had that issue with my PS3 since I use a toslink optical cable for the surround. Try loading your cable box's system setup screen and see if there are any audio out options (power the box off and press Menu on the remote works on my box).

Also make sure the video on the box isn't outputting an interlaced signal or it will glitch on your laptop monitor.

I just tried it with my Xbox360 as well. I am still not getting any Audio coming out of my Alienware's speakers when using HDMI-IN

About this, my cable box regularly sends audio through its HDMI port. I have it going straight into my surround system. Also, i mentioned above I am still not getting audio through my Alienware while using HDMI-IN with my Xbox as well.

Nevermind, I actually got this working by going into the audio settings in Windows and directing my computer "Listen to this Device" and to direct the audio out through the speakers in the HDMI-IN settings.

Odd that this was not pre-set from the factory. But it was an easy fix.

Here are the settings I had to change to make HDMI-IN audio work. Hope this helps others in the future

I honestly can't understand why they would favour an HDMI IN over an HDMI OUT. I would have probably made much more use out of an OUT then an IN.

i dont think anyone is favoring hdmi out over in
most people like me likes to have the feature
in fact it will save me money because i can use it as a screen instead of buying an monitor for console gaming or other input devices.
can someone please answer my q above.

Not sure what you mean about favouring hdmi in, the r3 has in and out. Not sure about the r4 as mine doesn't arrive till Wednesday.

On the r3 I had an issue with no sound, which was down to a driver issue. I had to delete the idt audio driver due to issues with my spifd port and that also removed my hdmi in audio support.

I found no issues at all in about 72 hours of MW3 using my r3 as a monitor for ps3. IMO its a really handy feature and saves me lugging a tv around everywhere when I'm working away.

Not noticeably on mine, unfortunately my r3 is now a very expensive paperweight so I can't go look again but I remember the image being quite good quality.

Had a sound problem due to a faulty spifd port, required motherboard replacement to fix but after 3 motherboards, 2 gpus and 3 CPUs now won't turn on.

I can't fault aw customer support though, as soon as I suggested a replacement system, they approved it and upgraded every component :D

And just an FYI, but the R4 does have BOTH HDMI-In and HDMI-Out.

I really like the HDMI-In Feature. I cant say that I will probably use it frequently, but it is nice to have if needed.
