Did you go into your 360 settings and set it to 1080p?

when I tried HDMI-IN, there was a ghost image overlaid on the main image. It didn't go away until I changed the refresh rate then changed it back.

    So give that a try.

I made sure it was in 1080p and it is a slim xbox. I also have the 1080p screen on laptop.

It is a 1080p screen, so if you're running your XBox in at native resolution, is should look much sharper than a big screen TV because you have the same number of pixels crammed into a smaller screen. That has got to be the issue. Make sure it is set to your screen's native resolution.

ill try it again and see if it works better. In terms of what it looks like though it is basically just not a very sharp picture. Its hard to describe. its playable but doesn't look nearly as good as even a 720p screen

It should look very sharp if you're running at native.

I tried it the first day, and it worked fine. Haven't tried since the new BIOS thought.

Though the xbox 360 will be able to display 1080p, it only does it for internet content, such as netflix. Other than that, games and DVDs are 720p last I checked. The PS3 on the other hand have a 1080p menu + blu rays :D, but games and DVDs will also show up in 720p.
So if you re using the xbox for DVD movies or games than it should be 720p, but in no case will it be 1080p :)
Now maybe you are right that the quality is not even 720p, in that case do check the settings :)

EDIT: I actually did yet another research plus turned my roommate's xbox on, I was wrong about the menu here it is 1080p and certain games as well. But most games on xbox run in 720p so make sure you know the resolution of a certain game and what to expect

btw dvds are actually 480p not 720 regardless of what plays them. some players will "upconvert" them to 720 or 1080p but it doesn't really matter as the tv will still upconvert it to 1080p roughly the same way anyway - unless you set the tv to not scale the image in which case it'll just be a tiny rectangle in the middle of the screen.
