Hello!! I recently bought an Alienware M17x R3 with these specs:

    i7 2760QM CPU @ 2.40 Hz
    GTX 580M Video Card
    8 gb RAM
    1.5 TB HDD

    Okay, so here's my problem:

I can play games okay, but when I'm playing for about 15 minutes, the game suddenly lags and is unplayable. When i minimize the game and wait for a few moments, then bring the game back up again, it will run smoothly again for about 5 minutes before lagging again.. Is there a fix for that??

    Thanks!!!!

Hey man, first off, try the throttling fix in my sig. If it still happens it means you are reaching 78C. Perform my fix and report back :)

Did your R3 come with 3D glasses and a 120Hz screen?

Shouldn't be that risky at all.

Is your gaming still slowing down at 65 ish degrees? Then I'll recommend
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ttling-m17x-r3-580m-without-120hz-screen.html
since wizedu's guide didn't work for me.

If you're slowing down at 78degrees, then prop up the back of your laptop, it greatly improves ventilation and help reduced temperature. check if still throttles. Still does?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...e-fixing-m17x-r3-580m-thermal-throttling.html

These should totally fix your throttle, just follow the step meticulously.

    Hello,

I had the same symptoms and what eventually got rid of them was a graphics card/mobo replacement and a re-paste using mx-4.

With my laptop it seemed that something was faulty and was causing the thermal throttle to appear much much faster then normally - within 15s on Furmark (post fix it does not happen) so I guess what I am trying to say is try to figure out if you are having a normal thermal throttle issue or you have some hardware issue thats causing the throttle to appear quicker. Also regardless a good thermal paste should help out.

hi, Wide is the MAN with this issue! I had exactly the same issue that was fixed (mostly) with a replacement heatsink installed by dell - see my pics in the post referenced above. You can confirm this using MSI Afterburner. this has an on-screen display component that displays temp and clock speed while you are playing games: MSI Afterburner . Don't change any clock settings with this, just use it for monitoring. If you need help setting it up PM me and I'll give you the lowdown.
I'd advise a call to dell, they know about this problem so you shouldn't have to go through a bunch of hoops before they send someone to fix it :). Repasting could be a scary task if you have never done this sort of stuff before but would (if you see temps approaching 78C) probably fix it.
