so i know this problem has occurred with many people but i cannot find a solution to this problem...so i try plugging in my xbox 360 or ps3 into my alienware m17x r3 and the video is fine but the audio doesnt even play. i updated some drivers off dell's website and no luck...also the "HDMI IN" in the sound options in my control panel also has "Currently Unavailable" isnt that suppose to say "ready"? thanks in advance!

There should be a setting in the PS3 menu where it asks how you want your audio.. Maybe it's not set as default?

thanks for the help, nah i tried that option on both the ps3 & xbox 360, found out that before yu got to hdmi, BOTH HDMI In & Rec. playback must be set as defaults. IF i remember correctly HDMI in must be the default communication device and the rec. playback must be the default device, or vice verse if that doesnt work. now im content till i save up for a 580m!

ive tried that but at the time it wasnt the solution, but you do need to do that! so + rep But there is more to it than that, its weird how there are tons of different solutions to this problem depending on the laptop itself, need to look into that.

Another person had the same issue a few weeks ago. His turned out to be that the IDT audio drivers were not installed properly so under the recording devices for his sound panel there was no HDMI In option.

Check and see if yours is listed there (right click the speaker icon on the desktop, pick Recording devices). If it is not, reinstall your IDT Drivers. If it is listed there, right click on HDMI In, select Properties, go to the Listen tab, and check the box labeled "Listen to this device"

He speaks of me, and yes, Beradon is right. That is what fixed the problem. Got to install the IDT audio drivers from dell's website. :)
