Hi Guys,
I finally decided to upgrade my year old M17xR3 3D with a new Samsung 830 256GB SSD and a nVidia GTX 580M. However, I do NOT think that I am running the SSD at SATA III speeds as crystaldiskmark reports the writing speed at around 251 MB/sec. Is this normal? FYI, I have installed the SSD at port O HDD slot and I am using a secondary drive in Port I .
Moreover, I am using a heatsink from my 460M with the new 580M and the idle temp of my system is 62 deg. I think its way too high, isn't it?
Any suggestions appreciated guys. Thanks

Yes on both counts, use bios A08 and put your SSD in port1. You should get a proper heatsink for that imho. A good repaste should bring things down to under 60 but I recommendd looking for a heatsink.

Thanks widezu.. let me try your suggestions. My BIOS is A08. As for the heat-sink, I cannot find the correct one and the link you had posted the other day(ebay), the guy is asking way TOO much for it. I will keep on looking though.
I will change the SSD slot and will report. Cheers
Update:
Switched it to port I and the speeds went up to ~485 MB/S read/write.. I think this is as expected of SATA III levels right ?
The heat on the 580M is still a issue though. The idle temps is hovering at 55 deg cel (after applying AS5 and thermal pads again) and in game Battlefield, its reaching upto 80 deg and I feel like my game is stuttering as well. Any recommendations guys? Its is highly appreciated lads.

Repaste with a better paste, and elevate the back of the laptop. Monitor the graphs with GPUz to verify if there is any throttling.

they came out with a newer 580m heatsink. I don't know how much of a difference that makes

I re-pasted it AS5 again but to no effect. I am using a notebook cooler as well but I am pretty sure the card is throttling after it reaches a "certain" temperature. I guess I really need the newer heat-sink for the 580M. Please let me know the links if it is for sale anywhere. Thanks.
On a side note, this Samsung 830 series is a BEAST. ULTRA impressive I might add. -
Does you GPU throttle at just before 80C?
-
VoodooChild Notebook Evangelist
^^ Exactly mate. Any work around for that ???

Try this:

Only use this when gaming, not in everyday use. -

OK mate, will try that and update. Thanks a TON !!!
Another update: The throttling in this system is just INSANE.. I can hardly play BF3 for 2 mins before FPS drops down to ~4-5 fps. May be its the heat sink right guys? I opened up my laptop just after I quit BF3 and the entire heat-sink is HOT !! I mean, even the sides of the heat sink in is burning. Is there NO chance I can manage using this 460M heat-sink even for a few days until I can get hold of a 580M heat-sink?
This throttling is a bunch load of crap. I bought a SSD worth 240 quids, a gfx card worth 375 Quids(not to mention over 1200 quids for the laptop itself) and this system plays worse than my 460M EVER did !!! I bought a M15x before this and it had the same THROTTLING problem with 940XM which Dell took over a year to fix. Now I am stuck with this 580M throttling issues.
Supporting DELL is like supporting ARSENAL, you can cheer with all your heart and soul but you always end up getting UTTERLY disappointed most of the time.
What a TOOL is 580M is.. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Sighs...sorry to hear that mate!
But a throttling 580m will give you worse performance than your 460m...that is true.
Is it underwarranty? Can you call dell to repaste and repad your computer? -
VoodooChild Notebook Evangelist
I agree with you there. But whenever a 580M runs properly, it literally blows a 460M out of the water and I have used both.
I followed widezu's throttling fix and it runs great until I hit a temp of around ~78deg. I think i'll have to live with this now.
As far as my warranty is concerned, I ran out of it 6 months ago.
I have re-padded and re-pasted my heat-sink three times already(and i have to say i kept doing it better each time) but to no avail. By the way, i am still using a 460M heat-sink as I cannot find a 580m's heat-sink anywhere in the UK.
Thanks for the input mate, truly appreciate that. Cheers -
You are propping the back of the laptop by a few inches, yes?
Plus did you take the black tape off the heatsink copper part that makes contact with the die? -

I am using a laptop cooler but i did NOT remove the black stuff from the copper contacts.
DAMN.. let me get this done and I'll report back.
you guys are TOO damn cool. -
DO you still have your 460M? I would put it back into your computer until you can find a heatsink. No point in melting your laptop for a couple minutes of better graphics.

This is the 580M heatsink you want:
"V1K2G Nvidia GeForce GTX580m N12E-GTX2 MXM Thermal Heat Sink Assembly."
See http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ttling-see-post-191-later-31.html#post8408780.
The price is $24.99, plus s&h and tax; total was about $33.00. Currently in stock and available. Dell Parts: 1-877-717-3355. Delivered in four days.
I also had a 460M heatsink originally supplied with the 580M card. Just stripping off all of the black thermal tape/material on the face of the heatsink allows full coverage of the 580M GPU die and improved cooling enormously. -
VoodooChild Notebook Evangelist
^^^ I TOTALLY AGREE.
After stripping off the black tape, the temperature never reached more than 64deg after playing BF3 for 30 minutes. So I guess the difference really is "enormous" just like Rev said.
Thanks a lot for these guys. I don't know what I would have done if it wasn't for you guys. I think its about time I get the "correct" heat-sink though. -
Sorry to jump on the thread but I have the same problem with my Samsung ssd with slow read and write @ 226
I have put it in port 1 but I'm running bios v09, I'm ok to downgrade it to v08.
It the downgrade done the same way as upgrading?
Thanks a lot
