Hey guys. Just received my M18x R2 on Tuesday. It's actually quite great...Dell's quality control (QC) nailed it - perfect everything. I'm happy...however...the 680M is now out and those 120hz screens on the M17x R4 are tempting me. Plus, I'm thinking that, although I love the size, it may be a bit much to travel with the M18x R2. You prepare yourself for the size (12 lbs...ok) but no matter what - you just have no idea until you see it in person. ENORMOUS! It's awesome but at the same time moving it around will be...interesting. :)

Has anyone moved from an M18x to a M17x? What was your experience like? I'm debating returning this and waiting to re-order a M17x R4 with 680M/120hz...I primarily play BF3.

Haha - is that the only weight difference there is? WOW. EDIT: it's 9.39 lbs for the M17x R4. :)

Still...120hz screen. Man...so hard to decide. This M18x R2 is perfect. Like...flawless. I went though two M14x R1s last year so that's why I'm so surprised regarding the initial quality.

Well, I think it's simply because there are not any 18" 120hz screens available. Whereas at the 17" form factor there is 120hz available.

I went to the m17x cause having the best one gpu is best, less issues with crossfire and when it comes time to upgrade gpu you only have to worry about selling and buying one gpu

Sk3tch, i only do this if i don't lose on the deal. You don't gain much with the 120hz screen except for nvidia 3d, but then you are forever tied to nvidia vid cards (which might not be a bad thing unless you like the 7970m). 3d isn't really practical in the m17x cause you have to render the frame twice for the effect which effectively drops your FPS in half

looking at the specs of your m18x, it is a killer laptop...the m18x's also have better cooling. you'll find it hard to maintain decent temps on a XM CPu in a m17x

Thanks for the response and good insight into the situation.

My main reason for 120hz would be for competitive online multi-player. It appears the 680M can hit 70-80+ FPS (which takes advantage of the 120hz for add'l fluidity) pretty easily if you tinker with settings.

I just received my laptop on Tuesday, so I can still return it and not "lose on the deal" - so it's a tempting move. Although I'm really enjoying the OC capability of the 7970M. Just scored a P11413 with an OC.

I'd also go no-XM...it's cool to have but not worth it when I could put that into 120hz ($400 upgrade) and 680M ($300 upgrade over a single 7970M).

Or I could return the M18x R2 and re-order the same unit when 680M is available. Heh. I will probably stick to it. It's growing on me.

Yeah. I'd get the same good deal on an M17x R4 - so I'm not worried there. :)
