Hi. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my m17x r3 and feel the need to replace my basic headset which I'm using in place of some old Zalman 5.1 headphones that have issues.

I understand from reading various threads that the onboard sound on the m17x r3 is a little weak for such a powerful system and that I should probably look to getting a set of USB headphones to bypass the poor onboard sound.

I'm particularly interested in the headsets which allow me to listen to my game environment to give me feedback on sounds around me to give me "early warning" if you like of people trying to knife me!

A lot of people recommend the Sennheiser PC360 or HD595/555 but I believe you need a good soundcard for these and I'm aware they aren't USB. Would these be good on the m17x r3 built in sound?

Corsairs USB HS-1 seem to offer great value and have favourable reviews but what are peoples opinions/recommendations on these and other choices?

I have the Logitech G930 and I like it very much. It is wireless with a USB dongle. It's 7.1 sound with a great mic, it has very good pickup. It has memory phone cups, and top rail thingy. So it's pretty comfortable for long gaming sessions. Also it has well over a 30ft range, so you can easily hop up and run to the bathroom or grab another beer and still keep up with whats going on. I use it for ARMA, and Battlefield 3.

The only thing I don't like is the size of the USB Dongle that hangs out the side of my laptop. I wish it worked with the so called Unifying Logitech adapters..

Oh well, great headset non the less.

    Thanks
    Mike

you are 100% correct..when you have a good sound card, you can get a good analog headset...when you have a mediocre sound card (like we have in the alienwares), you get a USB headset. I have the Sennheiser 555's on another computer, but i don't use them on the alienware. They reproduce good sound quality but are not meant for 3d gaming

What is your budget? If you are looking at the HS-1 class of headsets, you should also look at the Sound Blaster Tactic 3D alpha...its about the same price. I have these and they kick butt when used via USB and its THX Trustudio...comes with built in X-FI soundcard

I guess up to 100 gbp but ideally cheaper. I'm about value for money I suppose, but I don't like buying stuff that doesn't perform well. Basically, if it works well for bf3 then that ticks the box!

I have the Logitech G35 (basically the same headset as the G930 but it has a USB cord rather than wireless). I love them. They sound great and the 7.1 simulation is amazing...especially in BF3. I ended up getting them when they went on sale for $65 or so which is totally worth it. +1 for the Logitech series gaming headsets!

if you want an immersive 3d gaming experience that will blow your mind...and then listen to Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto right after, look into the SB tactic 3d alphas. They will surprise you with the sound reproduction when used via digital...last i checked they were $50 shipped...they are selling them cheap now because the newer headsets are coming for 2012

Used the creative labs xfi Go USB soundcard to get virtual surround for bc2/bf3 but now i have a m17x r3 i'm wondering if i need it anymore. Anyone had experience getting virtual surround working in bf3 without a third party sound card?
