I'm having a heat throttle issue. Everytime my gpu hits 77c it throttles down or the driver crashes. I'm using the lastest 320.49 driver. Is there any fix for this? It's very frustrating

Hi, I had this problem a while ago. That driver is not a good one for causing crashes, the last good one was 314.22 and it runs a little cooler with that driver. The main issue is that it should never get that hot and needs either a clean out of the fans or a repaste of the heatsink.

To clean out the fans just remove the lower cover, remove the three screws holding down the fans (might as well do both) and lift them clear. Now if you have a can of compressed air you can clear the dust out. If not then you need to remove the card and heatsink as a complete unit to clean it.

If you have warranty then dell will replace the heatsink for you.

    Good luck.

thank you for the reply, i do still have warranty. i also got myself some thermal paste as i havent repasted the gpu heatsink in a long time so doing that would probaly help. im also wondering why the new 3dmark doesnt see my nvidia card ?

It's runs using my intel card. Is doesn't detect my 580m. Also I tried the 314.22 driver. Playing crysis 2 for about 15 minutes and the driver crashes

Only a repaste and check the pads if you have cleaned it out. Top temp on stock clocks should never go above around 70c. My 580, after a new heatsink, never went above 68c.

There are many, many fixes to this out there just search the forums for the bios flashes if you want to go that route. My advice is to go back to pre 3xx drivers as I just did. Just do a google search, or even forum search as you'll end up back here probably anyway, on 580m throttling and there are a lot of different fixes you can try. I did them all and my card throttling was fixed back when I got my m17xR3 last year but with 320.49, and worse yet 320.18 if you got it, these new drivers are causing all kinds of issues not the least of which is overvolting which can easily cause you to throttle if you haven't experienced it before let alone burn the card out itself which it most likely has done to mine though I am hoping not. Good luck getting it fixed and go back to a more stable driver ASAP.

i just had a tech come and replace my heatsink under warranty. fresh heat sink, fresh repaste, just finished running the heaven benchmark at stock clocks and still got the throttle at 77. Either the card is defective, or my drivers suck. ive tried all the way down to 314.22 and still no luck. im considering calling alienware again telling them my problem has not been solved.

ive even tried flashing the bios with a version found on this forum which was apparently a throttle fix. if anyone has a link to a vbios thatll fix this, it would be awesome if you could post it up

The fix you tried is probably the one I used. It is for the power throttle that often happens during gaming. It simply matches the top two clocks so that when it happens there is no change. The 78c throttle has no fix apart from making sure it never gets that hot. Looks like it's back to dell, after a heatsink replacement they replaced both card and heatsink on my R3.

I feel for you. I had the same happen to me, when they suggested a motherboard I asked for a replacement. Got the R4 in my sig.

They will consider this if you have had 3 on-site hardware replacements but it is up to them if they do it?

They did. The R4 had just come out and they checked the outlet for a similar config, did not find one so built me this one. The tactic with the support rep was basically pleeding ' please help, I've had this machine 7 months and hardly got any use out of it! Any chance of a replacement - please?'

He said he'd check, came back and said it was approved. As there was no machine listed at the outlet I'd get a new one. I got a call the next day to check the config of a new build. Confirmed it and two weeks later new machine arrived.

ok so it looks like ill be calling dell for either a video card upgrade/replacement, or a new computer all together. its annoying that even at stock clocks im having overheating issue, BSOD, i even just tried the 296.10 driver, and my max temp hit 83, then the computer crashed on me. dell will be getting a very angry call from me

Yeah that temp is outrageous at stock. Try to hold your temper at first, shouting at the tech is not going to get him to go the extra mile in helping. Ask for a call from his manager if he does not come across - what country are you in?

Only ask as the US and CA get refurb's more often than new replacements - there are more of them around. Hopefully a refurb R4 with 675 is available, works good for me ;)

I wouldn't mind a refurb providing it works. I'm tired of these issues. How does the 675m compare to my 580m? Is it any faster ? Does it have throttling issues at all ?

It's supposed to be the same as the 580 only a rebadge. Clocks and performance are identical. Mine never goes above 65c without an overclock. The only mod I had to do was a vbios with P0 and P1 matched at 620/0,87v. Without this the power throttle often cut in during gaming and the clock drops to 450mhz. You can use nvidiaInspector to raise the P1 clock but the problem with that is that at the same time as dropping the clock the voltage drops to 0.08v and artifacting can occur. The vbios fix stops the voltage drop.

I got the vbios I am using here on NBR by just posting asking if anyone had a 675m vbios with matched P0/P1 clocks. If you do get one I do still have the vbios file I used ;)

Thanks alot that would be awesome. The tech put me on hold he's speaking with his manager about getting me a new laptop. If I do get a r4 with a 675m can it be over locked at all?

Mine is a little less able to cope with an OC than the original. At around 720mhz I start to see what I can only describe as small flashing lights, kinda like snow. I use nvidiainspector to set the clocks so that P1 is around 20mhz lower than P1 so that if it does want to throttle then it does get a little. I have saved shortcuts (mvidiainspector has create shortcut options) for my favorite clock settings and just mix and match them depending on the game - no need to push it if a game runs fine.

Ok so I just got off the phone with the tech. He sent a request out for a new unit to be sent to me. He told me there system shows I've had 4 video card replaced, the motherboard once, the LCD once and now the heat sink. He said if the request goes through ill get an r4 with a 675m. I'm wondering if I can get them to throw in a 680m instead? He told me 48hours till the request is either approved or denied. So if I get an r4 with the 675m what kind of performance am I looking at? From the sounds of it basically the same performance. As long as I get at minimum 45fps in crysis 2 with all settings at extreme(just below ultra) ill be happy. Could you share what kind of frames you get in games ? Also I'm curious as to what my chances of getting a replacement are

It's sounding good. What you get is all about what they can find. You could even get an offer of a new model! As for upgrading it, it probably will not be available. The machine is already built so you don't get to upgrade it (except at full cost - over £1K I was quoted for a 680m!)

Crysis 3 at almost everything ultra runs around 35-40FPS. Drop a couple of setting down 1 level and I see over 50FPS with a 720 overclock. Batman AC with max physics and only 1 setting dropped from the highest gives 48FPS in the in game benchmark. Max Payne 3 fully maxed out (and in 3D) is not so playable, around 25FPS to 30FPS, but again just dropping a setting or two with an OC and I get 35FPS to 45FPS which is perfectly acceptable for me in gaming.

    Good Luck!
