Hi there,
I feel dumb! I can't figure out how to turn 3D on. I tried to enable it by - Start > Nvidia Corporation > Enable 3D! Nothing happened. I did some reading and I noticed something different on my system from others. The "stereoscopic 3d" option is not showing up on the Nvidia control panel. Why would that be? How do I make it show up? I thought things would work out if I update the drivers. So I downloaded the 280.26 drivers from Nvidia and it won't install. The install fails saying it can't find compatible graphics hardware! What do I do now? I'm not very technical and feeling very intimidated by all this!! Any help would be great!
Thank you

Hi yuts..first of all relax...
What is your bios version? Current Bios is A08. If you have A06 and above its fine. I received mine last week with A06 .
No.2 you have to download the 280.26 driver from nvidia's forum link. Its the latest driver but they have forgotten to add Alienware 580m to it. What was the Nvidia original driver that was installed in your system? However its not important. Just uninstall whatever driver you have from your system. Reboot. and then you install the 280.26 driver which is from the nvidia's forum. NOT THE ONE YOU DOWNLOAD DIRECT FROM THEIR DRIVER WEBSITE.
When you install it windows will say this driver is not signed. But go ahead and install it anyway.
If you are savvy in installing softwares please download Drive Sweeper after you uninstall the nvidia driver from your comp. It helps in removing all sort of remnant registry entries.
And then do the 280 driver installation as stated above. After you have installed and rebooted the driver, right click on your desktop and open nvidia applet NOT WINDOWS PERSONALISATION/RESOLUTION BOX. Make sure you set the resolution to 1920x1080 and choose 120hz as your refresh rate The stereoscoping 3D setting options will appear on the left side. Over there, you must check mark to enable the stereoscopic 3D. The display type should alienware 3d vision. Below you will see a bar for testing stereoscopic vision. If you click the bar directly it will open another smaller box for various customisations. You can counter check you resolution and refresh rate. You may launch the test application. This will show a cool short display of Nvidia stuff in awesome 3D. if you want to run the wizard for setup , instead of clicking the bar directly click on the arrow at the end of the bar, which will give you a dropbox with 2 options. One is the wizard.Run the wizard. Keep your glasses ready for the steps above. Turn it on and follow the wizard instruction.
You should be done successfully.
I will search the link for the nvidia forum and post it asap if someone else doestn do it b4 me.
Stereoscopic 3D only works on fullscreen mode. To watch 3D movies its best to use players like powerdvd 10 or 11. -
Thank you so much for trying to help me! The Bios version is A04. I suppose I should update it to A08.
The nvidia forum - Are you talking about the laptopvideo2go? this driver here? - v280.26 Windows 7/Vista 64bit | NVIDIA OEM Notebook - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
I will follow your steps. I will update the Bios to A08 for now!
Edit: Thanks for taking the time vads! Everything's working fine now! Now to try some games! What are some good 3D games?
Thank you -
Ah! I am so sorry...I had dozed off..Its great that you got it to work. The bios A04 doesnt come with 3D feature incorporated with it. This is what been mentioned by those who have studied it. You may want to check out the throttling issue on on Nvidia 580m machines. Dell has set one throttle which is at a much lower temperature compared to that which is set in the VBIOS of the card.
Gandalf had made a thread about this and as to how remove the Dell bios throttle. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO FOLLOW HIS STEPS TO THE WORD. I SAY THIS IN BOLD BECAUSE THERE IS ANOTHER ROUTE WHERE SOME ARE BRICKING/CORRUPTING THE BIOS USING A MODDED A04 FIRST and then flashing A08. Since there is a way to do it without bricking/corrupting the bios, it would be then the best way to do so. You will understand once you go through his sticky.

{ After it shuts down permanently, do remember to pull out the USB stick before you power it up again. Its a little scary, but be calm when you do it. Its great if you another system next to you. Otherwise just make sure you read and understand the steps properly especially about holding down the "end" key etc.}
At the end of it you get the bios thermal throttle removed. The GPU thermal throttle is set at 80 C.
Hope it helps and you are most welcome.
