No. 6970m is the second most powerful mobile gpu out there. The 460m just lies on the seventh spot.

Your question is a bit open eneded but for most users the 6870 is the weakest card, the 460m is the mid level card and the only one that supports 3d directly, the 6970 beats both of the others by about 40-60%. The only way that order would change is if you use any CUDA heavy productivity apps on a regular basis which you would need the 460m for.

Technically speaking, the 6970 is a more powerful gpu, and that's reflected by the higher cost of getting it. So, if you're looking for peak performance get the 6970... However, the 460m is also a very fast and competent video card. It is not by any means weak.

I chose the 460m mostly because I prefer nvidia over ati, but thats a personal reason.

Don't ever go off of pricing in any way especially with Alienware. They are very known to have pricing that doesn't agree with performance levels especially due to Nvidia's ridiculous pricing for their product when compared to AMD/ATI. The R2 is a perfect example of that, the 285's were more expensive than the 5870's but the 5870's beat the 285's in performance levels on everything but CUDA/PhysX apps.

I just thought I should mention that all the suggestions for the AMD card were for the 6 970 and not for the 6 870 that you initially referred to in your query.

the ati card can do 3d on an external monitor but not the 120hz panel the R3 can comes with.

I use the 6870m currently and don't really mind it. Overclocked nicely, I managed to get it to 800/1100 before I stopped so I am not sure if it will go higher or not. Crysis 2 @ 1920x1080 high 40-50fps. I neve rexpected this laptop to live up to my desktop replacement expectations anyways, even with a 6970 seeing as my desktop is too much of a beast.

Everyone is telling that if u can afford the ati (Something they are referring about the cost)
But when we config. The Alienware M17x R.3 for ati then it cost less than the 3D model

And another thing i also want to know that what are the gaming performances on the ATI ONE OR ON THE NVIDIA one .... :)

I really don't understand how you are able to make posts in forums, yet seem to lack the simple knowledge of searching forums and/or Google.

    6970m benchmarks - Google Search

    http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&...=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=c9365e657b732f11

Those are your 2 valid choices. One has the benefit of 3D on the system, and the other has the benefit of much better performance. Quit creating unnecessary threads. There are already countless "Which video card" threads.

If you want 3D on the R3's screen then you MUST use the GTX460m. You don't have a choice here.

If you want a faster video card that can do 3D on an external monitor (monitor must be compatible) then the 6970 is the obvious better choice.

    Does that help?

I don't think i've seen anyone on these forums with the 6870 yet, pretty much all the ones i've seen are 6970 or 3D 460 bundled. I'd say go with the 460 if you aren't going to go for 6970. Even without 3D, I've personally had better experiences with NVIDIA than ATI in the past.

I use the 6870....Its basically a 5870 and they underclocked it, I managed to get mine above stock 5870 clocks. I stopped at 800/1100 as mentioned before. I dont know how a 460m performs so I cant compare.
