I just upgraded my m17xr2 with 2 xfire 6990's from eurocom. If i uninstall all drivers and everything I can get into windows, etc... but of course its not runing any drivers.

Now, if I install AMD 11.10's or even 12.1, whne i reboot to complete installation, It gets stuck at the boot windows logo screen. Only thing I can do is go into safemode, delete from device manager (i run drive sweeper for good measure), and then I can get bacjk into windows?

Any sugestions? Perhaps I need to undervolt cards? Please help (only hets stuck teh moment I install a driver)

check to see if you need to flash the vbios of those cards. I had that problem with 5870s where i installed drviers from ATI without flashing the vbios and I believe my cards got bricked.

ok will do. The people from eurocom said they already had the bios they use for other alienware upgrades, but i might have to flash then

if i were you, i would read the thread about dual 6970/6990s once again. There is considerable amount of risk flashing those cards and you do not want them bricked. Double check with that thread on what others did for eurocom cards.

sure. Did it say that the drivers installation was successful?

also to uninstall CCC, use Revo uninstaller pro and delete the left over files.

And have you tried Dell drivers from M18x page? Will that brick the card? i am assuming that eurocom does not provide drivers themselves like dell

it always installs, but the moment i REBOOT, it gets stuck at the windows 7 logo screen (the black background with the blooming windows logo). Tried 12.1 beta, 11.10 and 11.6.... all yielded same result

the good news is that the computer works fine with no AMD drivers isntalled... so at least it seems the cards are not fried

i wonder if i need to swtich teh cards from their respective slots... but the eurocom support team told me these cards do not have a master/slave set up, so it should work either way... any thoughts?

it should work either way. That was the case for my 5870s too.
have you tried dell stock one? I think that if you dont wanna read that 100 pg thread, your only shot would be to flash the vbios after trying the dell stock drivers.

btw, what PSU are you using? I guess you have the 35 w cpu so power shouldnt be much of an issue. I am trying to get the dell 6990s on my R2 as well but not sure if I can do it with the stock 240w psu. Especially since I want my cpu overclocked.

For now, this is what i would do if I were you. I could be wrong so consult that thread as much as you can:

    1) Try Dell stock drivers from M18x page
    2) Find the bios from that thread to flash on your eurocom cards
    3) Try installing the 11.10 or 12.1 or both to see whats up

Please report back if you can. I am probably going to get some in my R2 sometime soon and would like to figure things out before I do so.

I think that at this point, you will need to search on that entire thread. I know that SOME people were able to get dual 6990ms. I also heard that some of these people used TWO 240w PSUs to make a 480 PSU due to power usage. You will have to see what they did.

I know for sure that this person tried to get dual 580Ms working on R2, but failed. And it works with only one 580M. Considering that 6990 is very similar to 580M in terms of power usage, I am suspecting the same. Not sure if users got to meddle with the bios to have each slot provide more than 75w that it is supposed to in stock.

I switched the card from their slots... and basically tested the system with only one card.... and I got flashing scroll and caps.... From what i read... that means teh card is bricked.... but i didnt even flashed anything to it!!!
I wonder how this is going to go over with Eurocom tech support on Monday :(

flashing scroll and caps and number LED in on and no flash means video card is not working.

I am assuming that you havent done anything wrong during repasting so not sure why.. What driver did you use?

I remember when installing driver from ATI straight without having vbios flash screwed up my cards permanently.

u could have cracked a small component trying to tear apart the heat sink. But very unlikely.

This is what I think could have happened:
    - Your cards have different vbios.
    - Your master card had the flashed vbios while the slave one did not
    - Hence when you installed the drivers it did boot up (since master card bios is up to date) but could not actually load the drivers and have full boot since your slave card has old vbious.
    - Therefore when you tried to load up the computer with slave card only as primary, it bricked or some kind of other complication since its old bios could not support the lastest drivers you installed. Like I said, this seems to be what happened to me when I installed drivers from ATI without flashing vbios of my 5870s.

What happens now when you have both video cards installed and try to get to safemode? Does it give you the blinking light? If then perhaps your slave one is bricked... I cannot confirm for 100% whether having lastest drivers on your HDD can brick a video card when it has outdated bios. It happened to me like I said, but someone perhaps can confirm.

the reason why it was fine before was because you did not use the slave card (old vbios) as a primary card.

Yeah after switching teh cards from teh slots, the secondary card will always make the flashing lights report. I think you are right. The people from eurocom might have forgoten to flash the second card. I guess for now i will just run with one 6990.. sicne its probably better then the xfire 5870 setup.

I just hope Eurocom accepts returns/rmas.

As far as I know, for benchmarks, dual 5870s oced is much faster than a single 6990M. hehe

I guess you should check next time with gpu z in safe mode.
