Ok, so i thught my isntall was smooth until...

-Instance one- I powered off the machine for a couple of hours, when i came back and turned it back on... I got a fading psychedelig white screen. This persisted after several attemts. I then tried to boot with an external monitor plugged in... that fixed the problem but am scared to turn of the lappy for extended periods of time

-Instance two- while playing a game, the machine completely turned off (playing hawken), quick restart brught it back to life

-instance three- Machine locked up while playing a game (hawken), restart fixed the problem

temps have been below 75 at all times. Any ideas what could be happening?

1 could be because of incomplete cable connection when you put your monitor back after teardown.

As for 2 and 3, I have nothing to say other than updating driver to latest one if you haven't. Does it happen while playing other games too?

If the first symptom didn't happen again, I wouldn't to worry about it to much. At least I doubt it has anything to do with turning off the laptop for extended periods of time, that would be really weird :)

For the latter 2, how absolutely confident are you the temps of the GPU stay below 75 all the time? Are you running your cpu/gpu at stock or is there some OCing involved.
Maybe download 2 different programs for the temperature, I had some values which differed from eachother in GPU TEMP and in REAL TEMP.

My first hunch for the latter 2 would be thermal issues or a driver problem.
It doesn't hurt to completely remove Catalyst and all the drivers, clean the registry, and really remove it all with driversweeper in safe mode. Then reinstalling again.

Well, I have been checking tempts with hwinfo and an external lcd device (g-13 gamepad).
now, maybe the real question is, what temps are safe for the 7970m? I know my 6970 would run at 80's (sometime pushing 90's), and i was safe... isnt that true as well for the 7970's?

Oh, and i am runing stock clocks... nothing tweaked

For me, everything near or above the 80 degree area seemed asking for problems (aka thermal shutdowns).
After repasting, while gaming (even for hours on end), my card doesn't get above 70-71 degrees.

Wow, will monitor more closely... I think i have gotten to mid 70's... And i assume once i get into 2 monitor usage, it will only go up :(

To be more specific, if my card went to 81-82, it will thermal shutdown.
I don't think it has to do with card limit, but something with the R2 and the 7970m in specific. There have been more reports about thermal shutdown above 80 degrees.

So work on the cooling, I am quite confident your last 2 problems are heat related
