    Hi guys.

Just got my new m17x and turned it on for the very 1st time....absolutely love it!!

One question (probably of many to come) is that when i turned it on for the 1st time (no a/c connected) it boots to a black screen with writing asking me to press f1 to resume or f2 for setup....is this normal for it when not plugged into the mains.....i also noted it said error whilst on this page just above f1 and f2 options...

Please someone tell me that this is normal and that it isnt a problem already

Yes. In the bios go to the power tab and change the setting about power messages. One downside is it won't tell you if your power adapter stops working or you plug in the wrong one.

Im a novice here.....dont know even how to get into the bios or what to change settings wise......even if i did, why should i be having to do this! - its the 1st time ive turned it on! shouldnt it be set correctly from the factory - i mean i dont want to start messing already!

And change the setting to what exactly? - im not sure if i should be doing this after the 1st turn on - surely this isnt right?

Does everyone get this message 1st time they turn it on?

    Hi steviejones133,
Due to the fact that it's a gaming laptop, and it requires the AC adapter to enable the discrete cards (Nvidia 260/280/ATI), it warns you when you don't use it. This is very normal, and the message goes away once you use the AC adapter. Also, keep in mind that it boots with your integrated video card when you don't use the AC adapter. You have to plug it in, use the function keys to switch to your discrete cards, and restart.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

    It's fine.

Your system is just telling you that it really likes the juice that it gets from AC power, and is just reminding you to make sure that it is plugged in. If you want to use it exclusively on battery power, just hit the corresponding F key to continue.

PHEW! - thanks alot guys.....i thought it may just be a warning to use AC but being a 1st time AW owner, wasnt sure.
I know they are power hungry little beggars so kinda makes sense to have a warning and also very handy to know that if its not on AC, doesnt use my c/f 5870's (although i presume i CAN use them somehow on battery if needed??) if i wanted a battery life of 3 seconds lol

So , completely normal.....should i change the power message in bios (i presume that this will just bypass the warning and do no harm) or (at my own choice) leave it as is and just press F1 every time i boot from battery if so desired?
