I have an amazing deal on an R2 with CF 5870 loaded (crappy cpu that i can upgrade later) for like 1800 US. But it is "Scratch and dent"...how leary should I be in ordering and can I return a scratch and dent system?

If it were me I'd take it, you can either return it, or in some cases get a replacement part and swap it, you still come out ahead in most cases and its most likely the lid. You can return it with a restocking fee 21-days from Invoice. Have Dell support replace the scratched part that you purchase.

Heck, I have been helping my family buy "scratch and dent" items from the outlet for over 5 years and most of the time we cant even find a scratch or dent on it.
The latest one was a small desktop for my parents and the only scratch we found was a slight 1cm long discoloration on the back end of the tower.
You would have to really be looking for this to find it and even then it was in the back where you almost never go to begin with.
I say buy it, and if it is in really bad shape return and get something else.
