    QX9300, 1066mhz DDR3

Hard drives are SATA II but you can use any modern SSD in those, they will be capped to 270mb/sec sequential, but small file speed will be better.

There was talk of trying the 7970M in it... But the 5870M cards do work.

Both of those would work but the ram will downclock to 1066mhz.

Kingston hyper-X 1066mhz CL5 would technically be the fastest but can be pretty hard to find and is limited to 2GB sticks.

If your ivesting all that, I would just sell the R2 and get an R2. You'll get the added benefit of getting an RGB screen with the R2 if you find an R2 with an RGBLED screen. It's gorgeous. Plus you can probably get the R2 used in the marketplace with an SSD and 8GB RAM.

There are users who've been successful in installing an R2's motherboard in the R1 chassis. I haven't done this but on closer inspection it does look like the R1 and R2 share the same chassis. If that were true, it opens up a great deal of possible upgrades for you (depending on how much you want to spend). Tsunade has stated the best GPU an R1 can take is the AMD 5870m, whereas the R2 can handle the 7970m or 680m. So the bigger question is how much money and time are you willing to spend on this? If you just wanted to do a few small upgrades, then you'd best stay with your original R1 motherboard. The costs for upgrading the CPU and GPU will be far less than if you buy an R2 motherboard and then have to get the CPU and GPU for it.
