Here we go again ...980m code 31

980m on an AW 17 Ranger , all good but today uninstalled drivers using DDu restarted and now getting code 31 so can not now install the NVidia drivers , the card is fine ..all detected in bios etc ..even though windows is giving the card code 31 hardware id is correct as 980m but displayed as a Microsoft basic adaptor , tried restarting with disabled digital signature and still no go .....what can I do ...thanks

 

It's a driver issue.

I hope you didn't erase the C: drive. You should use AlienRespawn to restore the system to factory state.

 

Its an easy fix. Go the nvidia driver folder and add the hardware ID of the 980m in the .inf file , save it , then go back to nvidia driver and install again.

 

Hi , that wasn't the problem I have modded drivers etc , but problem was the NVidia drivers couldn't even detect the card let alone install anything due to the code 31 which basically disabled the card ......Anyway I found a fix if anyone else gets this issue , just do everything through device manager and install drivers through that , then manually select the card after choosing the right inf file and it installs fine , just not sure which caused the code 31 in the first place.

 

Fn + F5 and restart ?

 

if you open device manager and you can see both the nvidia and intel GPUs it means you're in optimus mode. if you only see one then it means you're in dedicated or PEG mode.

the modded drivers might not detect it because they're not designed for the mode the laptop is currently in - IOW you can't install the drivers using an inf modded for optimus when your laptop is in dedicated mode and vice versa.

 

Hi thanks for your replies , this is what happened I originally installed proper modded drivers 17_R5_9xxM_353.06 with the card and had no issues installing and uninstalling , I tried other drivers from laptops2go put in my details etc they would install without a hitch but after a few mins the system would lock up , so removed them re installed the 353.06 and all was good again , so what I did I downloaded the latest drivers opened up the nvdmi.inf added my details to a 980m already listed there ie changed whatever value was listed to 05AA , saved and they installed and worked perfectly , not sure if that's the right way to mod drivers but it worked flawlessly on my system , the only downside is since I did that and uninstalled and restarted this error came up code 31 , so whether the drivers I did myself caused this I have no idea , and I can only run in optimus mode if I try fn & f5 just the integrated intel chip shows , I can not do dedicated mode on my system ...this is the 8gb version I upgraded from an 880m ...thanks this really is all new to me ....any ideas what I need to do ...thanks in advance .
