I have just got my M17x recently from HIDevolution. My M17x uses 8gb (2dimms) of kingston hyperx 1600mhz. I don't know why the ram usage is about 2gb (1.90GB) when start up windows 7 (home premium). I don't run any big programs except for yahoo messenger and skype start up with the windows.
Im wondering it is because of the Alienware FX program causing high memory usage. But Im not sure if that's true or not.
My friend's laptop only uses 1.1gb of ram when start up (windows 7 home).
    Anyone has any idea?
    thanks

The more RAM you have, generally speaking, the more RAM Windows will use. That's actually a good thing because the machine works faster. High memory use or CPU utilization at idle can be a memory leak or malware, but in your case 75% of the memory is free if only 2GB are being used. My M18x generally uses 2.5-3.0GB of the 16GB available at idle.

Are you having any performance issues, or just concerned about the amount of memory in use?

Skype is actually a RAM hog anyway. Mine uses ~110MB just idling.

At the moment, I'm using 1.9GB, that's with the following open:

Firefox (two tabs), sidebar (four widgets), Steam, uTorrent, GTalk, GMusic, MSE, Splashtop, NVIDIA settings, Afterburner, VCD, Logitech settings.

All of the above is probably about 350MB, so I'd say your RAM usage is a bit high, but nothing really to be concerned about. (No game that I know of will need 6GB)
