So on the 1st of May I ordered a new Alienware 17 . When I ordered it I ordered it with Windows 8.1. I'm begining to wonder if I should have ordered it with 8.1 pro . Did I mess up? I do know I can upgrade it from MS for $99.00 once I get the machine .

Also How long does it usually take from the time its ordered till I receive it ? They are saying the 20th.

Unless you are going to be logging into a Domain with it at work or something, Pro isn't really worth it.

Windows 8.1 comes in three different versions: Basic Edition, Pro, and Enterprise.

Basic Edition – Windows 8.1 Basic Edition (or just Windows 8.1) is intended for home users. This version includes the core features, but none of the business features. Basic Edition is great for those general consumers (mother, grandmother, father, step-uncle, far removed cousin).

Pro – Windows 8.1 Pro is the operating system intended for small and medium-sized businesses. It provides abilities such as joining corporate domains, participating in Group Policy, allowing involvement in Work Place Join and Work Folders, encryption and more. You can find a good list of business features in the The IT Guide to Windows 8.1. Note that some of the new business features in Windows 8.1 Pro require a server running Windows Server 2012 R2 somewhere in the organization.

Enterprise – Windows 8.1 Enterprise is the version that brings business premium features to Windows. Available through Windows Software Assurance, Windows 8.1 Enterprise includes all of the same features of Windows 8.1 Pro and then adds things like Windows To Go, DirectAccess, BranchCache, AppLocker, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), and Windows 8 app deployment.

I went from 7 Home to 8.1 Pro.

The expense was worth it to me to run older Windows apps via HyperV and address 32GB RAM.

I also run OS X on my AW17 via VMWare.

I only use Windows for gaming, OS X for everything else (I came over from MacBook Pro/OS X).

Anyone ordering windows 8/8.1 period made a big mistake in my opinion - stop sending Microsoft a message that 8 is ok and buy 7 instead. Then hopefully Windows 9 won't be as bad.

It really depends on what you are going to use it for, if it's only for gaming then you won't need Pro.

I don't think you messed up. You'll have all the features pre-installed that Pro has, they just aren't unlocked. And don't worry, Windows 8/8.1 takes some getting used to, but it isn't the pile of crap everyone would lead you to believe.

This is true . The whole reason I asked was because I had Pro on my XPS15 but forgot which version it was when I was ordering the 17.
